Poll: Are You Going To See Moneyball?
At press time, Moneyball has a 94% rating on film review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. This means 94% of 128 available reviews have been positive, which is a notably high mark. For comparison, The King's Speech holds a 95% rating and Michael Lewis's other book-turned-film, The Blind Side, is at 66%. Roger Ebert gave Moneyball 4 stars out of 4. Peter Travers, 3.5 stars out of 4. The critics seem to love it.
Critical darlings don't always turn into box office successes. But the film has star power, a pair of Hall of Fame screenwriters and an aggressive marketing campaign on its side. It'll certainly receive my $10.50 this weekend. Are you going to see Moneyball? Respond to the poll question below.

There should be an option for people who don't want sabermetrics to suck it, but have no interest in seeing it.

Oh, well. A difference of opinion is what makes a horse race. I don’t like movies with a message. I go to the theater to be entertained, not to be beaten over the head.
I don't know that I really like movies with a message either
I’m just more entertained by suspense and dark atmosphere.

A dark movie theater is a much better place to watch scary movies than your living room.
Drive-ins are even better.

Drive-ins?
Are there any left in America?
I know the last in NJ closed down many years ago.
Ah the memories……every Saturday night about a dozen of us in about 6 cars heading up to the local drive-in for an all nighter. Just about the only cheap entertainment there was for the under age crowd. And getting the over age crowd (18 was the legal age to drink in my day) to spot us some brew, was even better.

The drive-in in Warwick, NY is the closest one to me that I know of.

Two 'near' me.
One about twenty miles away that never closed, and another maybe five miles away that re-opened last year. That one has $6 double features.
I would go to a drive in movie
if there was one remotely near me, if nothing but for the nostalgia.

I just looked it up, and I'd be downloading it if it was available for rent on itunes.
the plight of living on campus is extremely limited access to films. I have a whole spreadsheet of films that I intend on buying from amazon, if I ever have excess cash so sometime circa 2024, or illegally downloading if they’re on piratebay once I get off campus.

but if I can convince the fam to see it with me, then yes, to the theater I go.

Movie Theater?
I honestly didn’t know the mainstream actually still went to movie theaters. I guess I don’t get the attraction. Can’t say as I’ve actually been in one though in about 20 years or so.
Sure, I’ll be looking to see this movie.

It sucks to be you. Our local plex was closed for a year for renovations, and when it re-opened in June the prices had skyrocketed… to $8.00 (matinee, of course).

The worst is when my friends are set on seeing something in 3-D. Green Lantern was not worth my $17. Not even fucking close.

Green Lantern was a horrible movie
I don’t like DC to begin with, but my girlfriend wanted to see it (yeah, in 3D) so we went, and…ugh.
I’m not the kind of movie snob person that really even over-analyzes movies, but the plot holes in that movie (taking into account it’s own self-continuity) were miles wide.

I tried to change my fb relationship status to "it's complicated with netflix" but fb wouldn't let me
their movie streaming content is horrid and actively getting worse, but they have so many tv shows it’s hard for me to be angry with them. Except I don’t really have the time during the school year to sit down and watch a bunch of tv shows so it becomes useless.

I quit the streaming part
Techies can tsk tsk me all they want, but I want content. They’ve got everything I want on the DVD side, and only a handful of what I want on the streaming side (and the streaming stuff is available on DVD anyway).
If I want a movie instantly, I can rent it for $3 from Amazon or iTunes. Doing that twice a month and going with the 2 DVDs at a time plan from Netflix is still cheaper than the streaming and 1 DVD plan now.

I'd disagree, the content on streaming is pretty awful in terms of movies
I agree the tv shows are great, but I don’t think a lot of people really have time to go through seasons and seasons worth of tv shows, though it’s been great for me for discovering and watching british shows and their much shorter seasons, but now during the school year I really just want to watch a decent 1.5-2 hour movie every now and then when I have free time and in terms of that it’s nearly impossible to find anything I haven’t already seen. And this is from someone who hasn’t seen a massive number of movies

It's not up to them.
Their contracts with studios have limits. For example, their streaming rights to Sony movies expired when they hit a certain # of streaming customers. Starz has already said they’re not planning to renew their deal with Netflix to stream their movies and shows. They raised their prices because it’s going to cost a shitload more money to get streaming rights now than it did a few years ago. I’m fine with them raising their prices if it gets more movies on streaming.

by BobbyV_Incognito on Sep 23, 2011 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions
Oh I have no problem with the prices, my issue is with the streaming content
it seems they’ve focused on tv, I understand Starz won’t renew and they can’t afford the big new releases but they’ve dropped a huge amount of their pre-1970s content too, and that’s what I used it most for, and I imagine those would cost decidedly less than a number of new releases they have

It probably would, but we have no idea what each catalog costs.
And most likely, the rights holders are trying to squeeze them for everything they can get.

Not spending $14 to see it in theater
Only time I see movies in the theater now is when there are special effects that will look cool on the big screen. Comedies and dramas can wait for DVD. But, yes, I will be interested to see it overall. I am not that big into sabermetrics, definitely not anywhere near you all, but you know I at least respect them. I would follow the hybrid approach, some sabermetrics and some old school gut scouting. But, I digress, where was I? Oh yes, the movie. I am hoping it will broaden my perspective regarding sabermetrics via a cliff notes version, especially since I have little time to read the book. I read enough for work and soon to be further schooling.
So after looking around
everyone seemed to really enjoy it except for Keith Law, who hated it.
I think it's fine.
I'm going to be the guy that says
the book was better than the movie.
by aparkermarshall on Sep 23, 2011 1:02 PM EDT reply actions
has there ever been an instance where this is not true?
also unrelated, but part of the reason I really don’t want to see it is that for some reason Brad Pitt as the lead irks me. I like Brad Pitt, but I think he’s much better when he’s a complementary piece in a movie, and I don’t think I could sit through 2+ hrs of his portrayal.

For me
Field of Dreams surpassed Shoeless Joe – which was the book that movie was based on. Not to say Shoeless Joe wasn’t good b/c I did enjoyed it.
But in general, I usually like the books better than the movies.

I don't know about being "better", but
Vertigo the film is a lot more well known than the book it was based on, D’entre les morts by Boileau-Narcejac.

Two movies that might surpass the novels
are The Wizard of Oz and The Godfather, although I’ve never read either book, the films are among some of the best ever. Certainly the films are at least way more popular, and no one would be talking about either of those today if it weren’t for the films.
by MetsFanXXIII on Sep 23, 2011 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions
I've read The Godfather
And the movie might be better. The movie is almost exactly like the book, except they cut out a very long and unnecessary subplot involving the Godson as well as another involving the woman Sonny screwed at the wedding (and who sired his child, the star of number three). All I’ll say about the subplot is that it involves a description of the extraordinary size of the woman’s, err, privates, and the surgery she had. I’m totally serious here.
Yup, I remember all that.
I also remember the younger me being very confused about where that whole “sewing” scene was in the movies.

Fight Club
I also think that in many cases where the movie is better than the book, people don’t even realize that there was a book. I imagine not many people know that “Blade Runner”, or “Jaws” or “Bridge on the River Kwai” were all books before they were movies.

Escape From New York
The only thing better about the book is you find out what happened to Bob. (Line from the movie: “Do you know what they did to Bob?”)
What's a movie theater?
I have two small children. I go to the movies twice a year, and I suspect that my wife won’t be looking to watch a 2-hour movie about baseball stats. So DVD it is for me.
from the previews it kind of less about baseball stat and more a family drama type movie with broad appeal.
Like an overcoming the odds movie.
