I hope this isn't sacrilegious to say here, but this morning I read a link on MetsBlog to the Star Ledger, where Andy McCullough says this about Mets hitting coach Dave Hudgens:
"It is difficult to discern Hudgens’ effect on the offense. The team ranks second in the National League with a .335 on-base percentage, a 21-point improvement on 2010. Some of that credit could go to Hudgens, but some goes to All-Star first halves from Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran, plus a superlative six weeks from Ike Davis."
Does anybody else disagree with this as vehemently as I do? I have been so incredibly impressed with the job Dave Hudgens has done this season, and so it irks me to see him get as little respect as he does.
The Mets are #2 in the NL when it comes to On Base Percentage. Are you kidding me? Have you seen the New York Mets line-up? Jason Bay plays nearly every day. Jason Bay, the guy with the .316 OBP and Angel Pagan at .322. The Mets have gotten some terrific performances from guys like Justin Turner, Ruben Tejada, Lucas Duda, Nick Evans, guys you wouldn't expect in a million years to be making the kind of contributions they have at the MLB level.
These guys are not big league mashers but they have shown great approaches at the plate against better talent than they ever saw in the Minors. Justin Turner had an incredible run of driving in RISP, and at the end of the day you have to point to the guy who is preparing these hitters for the game. Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes may be veterans at this point, but they've had career years for themselves under Hudge. A lot of people expected Ike to hit a bump in the road as the league adjusted to his long swing, but he kept raking in his 6 weeks. David Wright came back from the DL refocused and buying into the system and he now looks like the player he was 4 years ago. Can it really all be coincidence?
Maybe most people here agree with me, after all, most sports writers in New York are pretty clueless. But I just want to show support for our hitting coach, who I think has a HUGE effect on our team. Does anybody/everybody else agree?
