He has a point
But, he misses the point. But, if I were in his shoes, I’d be saying/doing the same stuff they’re saying/doing.
As a fan of the Mets, it’s driving me up the walls, but I know that you’d have to pry the ownership of a baseball club from my hands kicking and screaming against my will from me if I owned it. They’re incredibly profitable things to own, overall, and puts you in a pretty exclusive club.

assuming he had more than 90 mil to invest in the players
2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!
Depends more on things like time, really, like I alluded to in my post below
If you had like two or three drafts to develop a strong farm system, you could field a more competitive team on as much or less.

it deserved a green
2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!
I'm mostly upset by the lack of follow up.
I’m talking to Costa via Twitter right now if you’d like to follow or chime in.
My point:
The fans think it’s Wilpon’s fault that the team isn’t winning. The “if we were winning…” point is total, utter fiction. The follow up question should be:
“Is it your fault that the team is losing at the same time you’re struggling to make ends meet? Or is it a complete coincidence?”

meh.....
I would ask why does everything you touch turn to shit
One day, this team is going to kill me.
what happened to the dot?
2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!
To be fair, I think there are a lot of non-financial reasons as to why the team/organization is struggling
Most of that comes down to Omar and his drafting and FA signing strategies, but ultimately, that does go back to ownership for allowing the GM to operate that way for a prolonged period of time- but it doesn’t have too much to do with the financial aspect of operations. Ignoring the claims that people like to make that “This is New York, and a New York team needs to spend boatloads of money!”, if the team had a sound foundation like Tampa Bay, or Arizona, we could be fielding a payroll around $100 million dollars but would be expecting a much different result in the standings come April (not that I think we’re doing to go 40-120 or anything, but…).

Sure, but what could Sandy have done for the team's playoff prospects this year
with another $30 or 40 million?
It’s on Fred.
What about $10M?
Maybe even $5M.

I'm not paying attention to Picard or bridge loans, no
But thanks for the strawman. The point is, I don’t see how $20 or $10 or however millions of dollars spent on this roster this offseason could be considered money well spent. I would loved to have resigned Reyes but if the postseason is the bottom line, trying to tread water to get fans excited is moot.

So Reyes wouldn't help in 2013 or 2014 etc?
Or someone like Cespedes or Wei-Yin Chen wouldn’t be a good speculative signing that could help in the future?

2012 Amazin' Avenue Offseason Plan: 2nd place
They might have, sure
But for every Ichiro there are 20 Kazuo Matsuis and given the position of talent at the major league level and the depth at the minor league level expensive gambles to fill positions of immediate need might not be the way to go.

If Mastui was signed to a 3-year/$11.3M contract (liek Chen was) he would have been a great signing.
I mean you are actually arguing that because a few guys fail, we shouldn’t sign any. Should we not have signed Harvey, Nimmo, Michael Fulmer, or Phillip Evans? Because the odds are not in their favor either and that could be $6.2M wasted.

Someone like Cespedes will make a lot of money
and has never played American professional baseball. The reward is high, I’m not disputing that, but when you only have a player for a set number of years, one of two of which will likely be punted, all you’ve accomplished is further hamstrung the payroll.
You don’t have to agree with me, but this is just what I think. Even if I didn’t, the Wilpons wouldn’t want to have the PR risk if either or those players don’t perform.

Yeah a 5-year/$20M contract would really hamgstring a payroll...

Luis Castillo only made $6 million
and that helped to hamstring the payroll for 4 years.

You realize Cespedes would be making less than that a year?
And we could fit it in without the payroll being $140M?

2012 Amazin' Avenue Offseason Plan: 2nd place
That's why I said he "only" made $6 million.
Let’s face it…dead money is dead money. 4 million, 6 million. Not much of a difference there. As long as Bay and Santana are making a combined 40 million of the Mets 90 million payroll, they’re not going to have much room, unfortunately. Cespedes or Chen or any of those types…they’re luxuries for teams with extra cash.

Chen was signed? Wow, I didn't even know. I feel silly since I was such an advocate
Hey, he got 3/$33.9. I said 3/$36 in my AAOP. People said I was overvaluing him. Ha, I say!

This is just silly
Playing meaningful games in September, as Fred likes to put it, is fun and exciting (and brings in a whole lot more revenue).
The fact that we’re going through a necessary bit of rebuilding doesn’t mean that everyone wouldn’t love a somewhat better team than this team, which will be lucky to have any hope to hold on to in June.
Massive debt, a propensity to say damaging/embarrassing things in the newspaper

How about a pompous son who made Omar look like the brains of the operation?
who wouldn't want that?
What if Fred moves, can someone else become our local owner?

No, really? I mean, Really?
That’s like saying if Mookie swung at the first pitch and flied out, we would have lost that game and the WS.
I wouldn’t care if he sat in the owner’s box and changed dresses between innings if this team was winning.

what he means is
if they had the money to run a big market franchise as such, then the fans wouldn’t be calling for them to sell due to their inability to fund the team properly, they would just be calling for them to sell due to the 30+ years of almost entirely fruitless efforts, embarrassments, wasted money and owner interference, BUT that the team would be in such a good position due to the current FO that we would be saying how brilliant the organization was run, by the current FO
