One day, this team is going to kill me.

Why did they bring back Hariston if they were going to go after Ross?

To back up or possibly platoon with Torres

if Torres gets off to a bad start. I’m thinking they don’t think Hairston can play CF. Ross would also be Duda’s defensive replacement late in game I’d bet.

by graves9 on Jan 21, 2012 6:26 PM EST up reply actions

It would be more orthodox to get a lefty hitter for the last OF spot....

But it might be better to just get the best guy available. Ross crushes LHP but he also has a .727 career OPS against RHP, which is better production than you’d get from a terrible left-handed hitter like Willie Harris.

by psiogen on Jan 21, 2012 7:11 PM EST up reply actions

Yuck.

I mean, from a baseball standpoint, he’s actually a pretty good pickup for the bench and he could realistically split time with all of the starters and be a nice insurance policy in case somebody gets hurt or struggles or whatever. But at the same time, it’s Cody Freakin’ Ross. He annoyed the hell out of Mets fans during his time with the Marlins and he just comes off as a professional troll, sort of a Victorino-lite, to me. Could I actually bring myself to root for him? I really don’t know.

Need Professional Depth

- I doubt they’ll sign him – or Francis, for that matter; but they need some professional depth on the bench or just to give us SOMETHING to post about once football is over!

I used to hate his guts.

I wouldn’t mind him on the team though.

ugh, cody ross

what a horrible, logical choice.

Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?

Yeah, he’d be a good signing, but…fuck this guy!

I'm a little surprised; I thought the FO was done chasing major league FAs.

He wouldn’t be a bad pickup, though.

I don't like Cody Ross

And I will give no logical or statistical reason as to why. I just don’t care for the guy.

A better writer than me said he looked like

“a baby with 5 o’clock shadow”. I also remember seeing a Mets/Marlins game at their old stadium in Florida. Pelfrey, with men on, drilled Ross with an obvious mistake pitch, and Ross went all faux-ballistic. That was when I started to actively dislike Cody. Having said that, he would be a great pickup, and yes, of course, I would root for him.

by neoncleon on Jan 22, 2012 1:58 PM EST reply actions

well it settled. Ross will be a smart pick up and can really help this team..

but no one will love him for it.

Depth

Ross would be a nice pickup. Can play all three OF positions adequately. Mashes LHP (and the Mets starting lineup right now looks vs. LH even if the bench is very RH).
Most of all, he´d give the Mets a 4th OF you´d be comfortable with starting over an extended period of time in case of injury. Don´t think that´s the case with Scott Hairston who basically is a PH who starts once a week vs. a tough LHP.

40 man roster

Who gets cut next to make room for Cody Ross? Unless it’s Carrasco, I don’t see how cutting another player is worth adding Ross, who will probably make more than the player being cut.

You always root for laundry. Of course, you'd like to have good players in that laundry as well.

by MetsCity on Jan 23, 2012 10:16 AM EST reply actions

My guess would be Armando Rodriguez,

but I thought he would have been already cut last time.

I'd be okay with him too

I don’t want to see any position players cut though.

I would have cut him over F-Mart already

Is he even a prospect? It seems like he’s been on the 40 man for a long time, at least for a 23 year old starter who didn’t exactly dominate St. Lucie.

He turns 24 on Saturday, so this is probably a make-or-break season for him.

Anyone know if he’ll be starting in AA?

by BobbyV_Incognito on Jan 23, 2012 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

He's put up pretty impressive strikeout numbers and opponent batting avgs in the minors

but he’s pretty much strictly a relief prospect at this point and one that’s still kind of far away, assuming he starts out in Binghamton this year. He’d probably be the guy I’d cut too.
