to be fair, the way he was villified for that strikeout
I wouldn’t blame him for not caring what NY fans think anymore.
Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?

If you were called a lazy and vilified by every major media outlet
you might have a chip on your shoulder too.

Which fanbase is he referring to?
It doesn’t say what question he was asked. Cardinal fans will be happy to have him on the team, and Mets fans, fuck them. I’m sure he knew what everyone said about him because of one at bat in a game that the Mets never would have dreamed of reaching if not for him. Just because he makes a ton of money doesn’t mean he has to care about peoples’ feelings if they’re unwilling to return the courtesy.

He's obviously referring to the Mets here
He says he doesn’t care what they think about 2006. No big deal either way.
"I only wanted a few things out of life -- a wife, children, to play baseball and to hunt deer." - Turk Wendell
I'm assuming he's referring to Mets fans who won't let go of the K
Not fans who realize they wouldn’t have been in a game 7 if Beltran hadn’t homered in Game 1.
I thought it might have been about
The Cardinals’ Best Fans In Baseball™ as a factor in his signing.

His quote is perfectly reasonable
"I dunno. I never smoked any Astroturf. "
– Tug McGraw when asked about his preference for grass or astroturf
Agreed.
let me translate.
“Build a fucking bridge and get your fat ass over it.”
it was 6 years ago. That pitch was unhittable. We blew it in 07 & 08 and no one asks him about that on and on ad nauseum.
The only person still asking about it is Andy Martino.
So Andy Martino, please shut the fuck up.

Don't really see the problem
I saw him as talking about Cardinals fans, not Mets fans, also, as in, “I don’t care if they loved me or hated me (2005 Astros, 2006 Mets), I wanted to sign with the best team, yada, yada, yada…”

Incredible
He’s not even on the team anymore and the media is still manufacturing controversies about him.

What do people expect him to say?
Such a loaded and unfair question

damned it I wish they'd leave him alone already
even if he won the WS with the Mets, they’d still bash him somehow

who hasn't moved on?
and who is so short-sighted to see that one pitch: is not to blame for us losing that series, does not mean his career as a Met was anything less than a gift to us fans?

O I get it
people who need to sell their paper/articles to new yorkers. As much as us new yorkers pump ourselves up for being a wise fanbase of all our sports teams, we got more dumbasses claiming they could fix the Islanders (for example of a currently bad and less popular NY team, not trying to pick on anyone) than most franchises have fans
