Mets Have Third-Lowest Percentage Of Negative fWAR Players Since 2002 - Beyond the Box Score
Only the Brewers and Red Sox have had a lower percentage of negative fWAR players — i.e., players who accrued a negative WAR for a season as measured by FanGraphs — than the Mets since 2002. So, yay!

I see, this is a percentage thing
I want to see the actual numbers
2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!
Just looking quickly at the last few years
There’s only six position players since 2008 that meet the 100 PA criteria:
Willie Harris (2011)
Ruben Tejada (2010)
Alex Cora (2010)
Jeremy Reed (2009)
Fernando Martinez (2009)
Marlon Anderson (2008)
Most of the guys you’d expect to be on there either didn’t get 100 PA (Gary Mathews Jr, Mike Jacobs, basically the entire 2009 Mets opening day lineup) or weren’t negative (Francoeur was +0.6 in 2010 believe it or not). Also it looks like this is just position players not all players so that certainly helped the Mets.
did you mean the 2010 opening day lineup? that was a legendary collection of awful.
I mean truly,
1. SS Alex Cora
2. 2B Luis Castillo
3. 3B David Wright
4. 1B Mike Jacobs
5. LF Jason Bay
6. CF Gary Matthews Jr.
7. RF Jeff Francoeur
8. C Rod Barajas
9. SP Johan Santana
That is just too tragic to not be funny
Hey, wait! I'm having one of those things. You know? A headache with pictures?

I am not flagging you
but that lineup is flagged. It is a clear hate crime against Met fans. There are 2 acceptable players on that lineup, and the second best hitter is the pitcher

seriously it must rank amongst the worst opening day lineups ever

I just realized what my 2012 slogan of the Mets should be:
“Let’s trot out another pathetic lineup!”

I actually think our lineup has a chance at being above average.
Our pitching and defense will be terrible though. Go Dickey and Niese!
i agree, our offense and bullpen will be terrific
but dragged down by a rotation of Dickey, Niese, and god help us

To be fair, Bay was acceptable at the time.
Most people thought he’d at least have a good first season. But even then, we all knew Cora, Castillo, Jacobs, Matthews Jr., Francoeur and Barajas had no business starting.
Most thought he wouldn't tank like he did
but know what we do now, yeaa

Brewers at number one?
Didn’t see that coming. Outside of a couple of seasons, they’ve been pretty awful for much of the decade (56-106 in 2002).
37 - 14 - 41 - 31 - 17 - 42 - SHEA
I think it's the opposite
If we had better peripheral players, 2006-2008 might have ended differently. That’s the bench and middle relief (not set-up/closer). The only real good bench guys I can remember are 2005 Marlon Anderson and Damian Easley.

Woodward FTW!
well, in 2005. He was terrible in ’06, on that list of negative fWAR.
Also, Endy, Castro and Tatis all were among the Mets leaders in fWAR from 2005-2010. Then there was Ruben Gotay too

Forgot about Endy and Tatis!
They got so much playing time, I don’t even think of them as bench players.

It was mainly about the pitching depth
And we were hurt by a few poor decisions in acquiring starting position players (Shawn Green, Luis Castillo, Moises Alou). The bench guys in 2006-8 were mostly great: Valentin, Tatis, Pagan, Easley, Castro, Endy, Murphy, Evans, Gotay.
you mean the starters disguised in wolf's clothing?

The problems with Omar were more that he sucked once you got past the starting 8
We never had any depth but got lucky outside of 09 with avoiding injuries. I’m actually surprised that we didn’t have more 09 suckitude though.
I'm stunned that Julio Franco didn't make the cut
0.3 and 0 WAR for 06 and 07 for those who were wondering.
it's age-adjusted
he should have been an all-star

I am fairly surprised by this,
I would have guessed closer to third-highest.
can you say comeback city
unrealistic but worth it

Dont call it a comeback
I think it's fine.

We didn't have many negative WAR players, but
1)It is considering only hitters (PA>100). During that span, we had a many problems with the pen and parts of the regular rotation posting between 0 and 0.5 WAR.
2)It would be interesting to study the position players with a higher PA threshold. We might have a lot of cases of regulars posting closer to 0.
In lobby for: Jaime Cevallos, Zack Lutz, orange unis and Rickroll as the 7th inning song.
