R.A. Dickey's Mt. Kilimanjaro Diary
R.A. Dickey is writing about his Mt. Kilimanjaro climb for the New York Times. He is currently two days into the climb and appears healthy and in good spirits. Tolkien references abound. Click here for all of his posts at the Times.

Ive heard some folks, not nec. on AA
Saying RA shouldn’t be doing this because he might hurt himself and hurt the team. Screw that. He knows they can not pay him if something happens and has made the decision to do something amazing for a great cause. He’s an amazing person and throws a mean knuckle ball to boot.
I believe in one Dickey, Maker of knuckles and balls

Devil's Advocate (sorry)
If we were a competitive team, I don’t think we would be into it if our best pitcher was risking his body like this but it is really cool.

He can do whatever he likes
The ballclub does not “own” him, and honestly, preventing him from going would be some very bad PR.

That's not what he said
He said, if we were competitive and a pitcher we were relying on went off on a bit of (even admirable) adventurism, we might have objections. I think it would be truly blinkered to argue that he’s wrong.
Apropros of nothing, “Knobowitzki” reminds me of Knoblauch, who was having his problems when I was first watching baseball, and so reminders of Knoblauch will always delight me.

My German colleague would always
squeal with delight about Chuck Knoblauch, seeing as his name in Deutsch is “Chuck Garlic.” So he delights me too.

Absolutely, I agree
I am not saying the Mets did anything wrong, I was just thinking it would have been tougher to swallow if the Mets were in a more front-running position
I disagree with that
He’s one of my favorite players and is a great person. If he injured himself, or god forbid something worse, how that affects the Mets placement in the standings isn’t a priority. These are real people, with families and lives outside of baseball, and from what we know about R.A., he wouldn’t be averse to taking this risk if the Mets project to win 50 games or 100.

I love reading this stuff
There is a lot to be said for risking your position for something that you strongly believe in, and giving yourself that kind of a challenge. I feel like very few other athletes would do something like this. Plus, Tolkien references make everything more awesome

I want to see some pictures
wow I wish I could do stuff like that. I just climbed some trails by my house, about 6000 feet above sea level but the trail is not steep
Any task BIG or small, Do it well or not at all
Dickey's exploits and our pitching prospects are about the only thing to be interested
in about the Mets this year.
I'm looking forward to new ownership among other things
I’ve lost the capacity to refrain from bitching about being reduced to dog shelter tenant status with the way I’ve been proverbially gawking and drooling out of my cage basement window at potentially new ownership.

I’m a Nats fan, but Dickey is easily the most awesome player in baseball. Possibly of the entire modern era.

Nah, bro. If I was a hater, I would have said...
Sounds like he is using 15 poor Africans running up a mountain at his beck and call to raise awareness for human trafficing.
Simply put, he is hiking with a staff of fifteen. Doesn’t sound like roughing it. He has a cook for fux sake.
When
he might instead do nothing, the man’s climbing a tall mountain to raise awareness for a life-or-death cause. He’s not a mountaineer. Seems sane to carry a staff.
by Pack Bringley on Jan 8, 2012 9:43 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
You misunderstand
He has a +15 Staff, not a staff of fifteen.

Seems to be standard for a climb.

WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT?
That a coporatized, professional baseball team run by criminals, who do not care about the patrons/fans at all (Jose, Jose, Jose, Goodbye. Until he beats us senseless when the Mets play the Marlins) have a “successful year” (playoffs, good ticket sales, higher ad revenue)?
Or young women who are taken to become sexual slaves, until they meet at an early death, but may finally find a safe refuge from that hell with the help of us, our team, our man?
WAKE UP!!!

Eh....
First, the Wilpons aren’t exactly “criminals”……..they are more like “idiots”.
Second, while it is great that RA is doing this to bring awareness to the issue, etc……his effort will make the tiniest (as in probably unmeasurable) difference, if any.
Third…..
with the help of us…what exactly are we doing other than comment on his post ?…..and, what exactly is
our teamdoing other than telling him that he shouldn’t climb the mountain ?
Not trying to be a dick on the third question(s), I honestly don’t know that anybody else is doing anything besides RA. Until the authorities get really involved, nothing much gets done.
One day, this team is going to kill me.
WTF is this comment about?
I’ve read it 5 times now and I’m still not sure what’s going on here.

I think he was talking about the gators in LA being pissed off after Katrina ?

Climing Mt. Kilimanjaro is more of a long hike.
He’s really not risking his life or anything. For a person in good shape, this shouldn’t be too hard. It’s a semi-strenuous 5-6 day hike. It’s not like he’s filming Cliffhanger 2 here.
I still think it’s awesome, particularly because this is for a cause, but he’s more likely to sprain an ankle than fall off the side of a mountain.

1) the wilpons and madoffs have been lifelong friends since the 70’s
they are some of the original circle that "invested " with Madoff
they wilpons who seemed to be close to billionares are broke and the mets are borrowing from the MLB to stay alive (70 million dollar loss last year)
2) the help in MONEY. The project has already passed its 100,000 goal
3) our team: if no one goes to the ball park, is they’re a NY Mets, or an MLB. Fans first.
4) Please stop ripping apart posts to the point you’re using TWO WORDS (our team) to knock down an an entire, complex point
And by the way, the authorities. Hope you weren’t in NEW ORLEANS WHEN KATRINA HIT

What does this have to do with Dickey climbing Kilimanjaro?

If you're inside his head
it’s probably all very clear.
wait......
what does Katrina have to do with Dickey climbing Kilimanjaro ?.
My head hurts.
One day, this team is going to kill me.
It all makes sense if you have what he's having
