Night Cap: Mets Drop Dull Game To Marlins

Jeurys Familia didn't allow any runs despite walking six in four innings, but the Mets still lost.

Although I'll miss the Mets as soon as the season ends on Wednesday evening, I will certainly not miss games like the one they played against the Marlins on Monday night. While practically every game in Major League Baseball had postseason implications, the Mets and Marlins are both simply playing out the string at this point.

Jeurys Familia got his first major league start, and it did not go well. It wasn't a meltdown, either, but Familia issued six walks in four innings and only notched one strikeout. He walked each of the first three batters he faced in the first inning, but the first two were both caught attempting to steal second base on a pair of excellent throws by Kelly Shoppach. On the upside, Familia only gave up one hit around all of those pesky walks and did not allow a run. Still, his start left a lot to be desired.

The Mets scored on a David Wright single in the fifth and scored again on a Mike Baxter double in the sixth. It was all downhill from there, though.

Elvin Ramirez had thrown a scoreless fifth inning, but the bullpen slowly coughed up the lead after that. Manny Acosta came on to pitch the sixth, and he immediately surrendered a home run to Giancarlo Stanton. It was the most predictable play in the history of baseball. Jon Rauch gave up a run in the seventh, and Ramon Ramirez gave up another in the eighth to give Miami the lead. That was all the Marlins needed to win the game.

The series continues tomorrow at 7:10 pm with R.A. Dickey making his final start of the season.
