Mets Morning News: November 3, 2012

Debby Wong-US PRESSWIRE

Mets morning news and links for November 3, 2012.

Yesterday was another quiet day for the Mets, but there were a couple relevant items that came up. Mike Nickeas has officially cleared waivers and been removed from the Mets' 40-man roster. Here's hoping the Mets can keep Kelly Shoppach around next year as the right-handed half of the platoon behind the plate.

Outfield prospect Darrell Ceciliani is doing his best to improve his game in the Arizona Fall League, according to the team's official website.

it's been a long time since he was with the Mets, but former pitching coach Rick Peterson is interviewing for a job with the Red Sox. Long live the jacket.

Thomas Wachtel found a sad Darryl Strawberry listing on eBay.

The big story yesterday was first reported as a trade, with the Cubs sending Carlos Marmol to the Angels in exchange for Dan Haren. But the trade somehow fell apart, and instead of getting Marmol for Haren, the Angels simply declined Haren's option. I've always liked Haren and don't think he's done just yet, but he and the Mets are obviously not a fit given the team's depth in the rotation and lack of money to spend.

Speaking of the Angels getting rid of players, the team won't give Torii Hunter a qualifying offer. He'd make sense for the Mets in right field, but he'll be priced out of their budget, too.

David Ortiz and the Red Sox have come to terms on a two-year deal.

The Astros held an event to celebrate their new uniforms. At least they'll look nice while they get dominated by the rest of the American League West.

Mark McGwire appears to be taking his hitting-coach skills to the Dodgers.
