Mets Morning News: The Dude Fractures His Wrist, While Nickeas Sails Off Into The Sunset

Meet the Mets

Bad news for Lucas Duda, as the outfielder err first baseman umm hitter (yeah, that's it) fractured his right wrist last month while moving furniture and he had surgery to repair it yesterday. It's thought that he'll be ready for spring training. No word on whether he was helping Keith Hernandez move, though.

The GM Meetings begin today but don't expect the Mets to make any big moves during them. As is typical with the November meetings, the front office will mostly use this time to lay the groundwork for future moves.

Get out the tissues, folks: catcher Mike Nickeas has opted for minor league free agency after the Mets outrighted him off of the 40-man roster a few days ago. Nickeas, with the Mets organization since 2006 when he was acquired from Texas for Victor Diaz, was squeezed off the 40-man roster by waiver acquisition Anthony Recker.

Via the Bill James Handbook, the Mets took the fewest extra bases in the majors in 2012 and they were also the fourth-worst baserunning team in baseball. Well, at least Jason Bay did something right.

Around the Majors

The search for the next Rockies' manager is down to Walt Weiss and Matt Williams, as Jason Giambi was eliminated from contention. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays are not close to picking a manager. In funny news, Art Howe is in lobby for the job. Umm...no.

The Dodgers are talking a big game early on in the offseason, as they have Zack Greinke and Anibal Sanchez on their free agent wishlist. Of course, they already threw lots of cash at merely decent reliever Brandon League last week but by lots of cash, I actually mean boatloads. Ned Colletti is crazy.

Jeff Sullivan has an interesting juxtaposition between the two Chris Youngs over at Fangraphs. Also, Chris Young the hitter is really good at pulling the ball. But only that.

The Mets are likely to go bargain hunting again this offseason and Mike Axisa looks at some interesting value guys. Personally, I like Nyjer Morgan a bit in center field should the Mets end up not being able to acquire somebody via trade.

Javier Vazquez may be looking to make a comeback after sitting out all of 2012. Seems like he'd be an interesting flyer on a minor league deal.

I wrote about some Minnesota Twins trade targets, should Sandy Alderson decide to make a deal with them to improve the outfield.
