The Mets will not trade Ike Davis, according to Joel Sherman

Jim McIsaac

Joel Sherman is reporting that the New York Mets will not be trading Ike Davis this winter.

One of the topics for discussion this winter was whether or not the Mets were going to consider trading first baseman Ike Davis. The thinking behind trading Davis was that they could plug Lucas Duda into the hole created at first base, and potentially address other holes on the roster by shopping Davis around. Joel Sherman is reporting today that Davis will not be moved, and that both he and Duda will be in the starting lineup in 2013.

Sherman suggests that the team is looking to add more power to the lineup next year, something that probably wouldn't be a terrible idea. Not to beat a dead horse here, but behind the plate and in the outfield would seem to be the obvious areas in which to improve in this department. It would seem reasonable to expect a little better power production from both Duda and Daniel Murphy as well, although replacing the 20 homeruns that Scott Hairston hit on a tight budget may be difficult.

All in all, I think most fans will be pleased with the fact that Ike will likely be in NY to start next season. Drafting Davis was one of the best things that Omar Minaya did, and I think most of us would expect to see Davis do nothing but increase his value in 2013. This might even be a good time to think about buying out his four years of arbitration eligibility, with his early season struggles it could prove a prudent gamble.
