Interesting Quotes from Ruben Amaro
Sounds like Papelbon might prevent him from signing Hamels, and he seems to think Howard is as good as Pujols...

If they let Hamels walk
Because of that stupid decision, I hope they name him GM for life.

Howard 05-09: 19.7 fWAR
Pujols 05-09: 43.2 fWAR

2012 Amazin' Avenue Offseason Plan: 2nd place
Just to make a point on how people think Howard is great and that Wright has been terrible
Howard 09-11: 7.6 fWAR (1967 PA)
Wright 09-11: 9.5 fWAR (1745 PA)
Not that either has been spectacular, but Wright has been clearly better.
It's even funnier with 07-08 fWAR:
Howard: 6.7
Wright: 16.0
Howard 10-11: 3.0 WAR (1,364 PAs)
Davis 20-11: 4.9 WAR (750 PAs)

That's unfair, Ike David had from 1920 to 2011 to accrue all that WAR.
In lobby for: Jaime Cevallos, Zack Lutz, orange unis and Rickroll as the 7th inning song.
The Unwritten Rules of AA
D'oh!
Coincidentally, there was an Ike Davis who played in the 1920s (1919; 1924-1925) with the Senators and White Sox. He only accumulated 0.8 WAR, though.

that's crazy!

But Ruben said...
He [Howard] was probably the most productive player during that span of anybody, including Pujols. This is not a slight against Cole — he has had some phenomenal years. But he is not the most decorated player in baseball
Ryan Howard had 2.6 WAR by 2006, when Cole Hamels made his debut, and is now at 23.1 WAR. Cole Hamels has 23 WAR. He has been better than Howard by fWAR 4/6 years. And he is a relatively young lefty who just had an amazing year, 8.1:1.8 k/9:BB/9 last year with a 3.05 FIP, 3.02 xFIP. He is also a work horse, averaging 193 innings per season over his career, and that is including the 132 his first year. How did this guy get to run a baseball team? How has he had any success running a baseball team?

Ew, foxsports.com? Ken Rosenthal?
It’s lines like this that explain why I don’t care what he has to say:
People forget, Howard signed his extension at a time when he was coming off a momentous start to his career. He was the NL Rookie of the Year in 2005, the MVP in ’06 and a top-five MVP finisher from ’07 to ’09.
I can’t believe they have Amaro on the record saying these things though, Philly is repeating all the mistakes the Mets just went through the past 3 years. Here’s hoping the collapse begins next year, after the addition of an ‘elite’ closer at 12.5 million AAV. I doubt if any team would have offered him that much, especially that early in the offseason, especially for four years. And they did it before the cba and got doubly screwed from it, no? Scott Boras must intimidate the shit out of Ruben if he got him to believe Paps had any other offers near that amount, or that length, especially that early in the year

Yes, Papelbon was signed before the new CBA was.
So, Amaro not only overpaid for him, but he screwed his team out of a comp pick in the process. Can he get an extension now, please?

'Philly is repeating all the mistakes the Mets just went through the past 3 years..'
I noticed that as well. Here’s hoping they keep right on doing that, even beyond the time it took the Mets to get it.
Yankees of the NL….just trying to buy talent.
At least the Yankees had those core 4 homegrown players through the early/mid 90s and the next 15 years or so.

I find it hilarious that they describe Amaro's aggression as "his biggest strength."
It might be true, in that he has no actual strengths, but it’s really a huge weakness.

Overall, Amaro is slightly better than Omar
But they’re equals in their shitty bidding against themselves approach for free agents.
I don't remember which moves are Amaro's and which are Gillick's
but I am really doubting they are different people at this point in time
2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!
Disrespect for Omar
Amaro inherited a team with a strong major league roster and a group of pretty strong prospects on the farm.
Minaya inherited a team with a subpar major league roster and a terrible farm system.
In the meantime, the Phillies are still good but feature one of the oldest major league rosters in Baseball – with their best under age 30 player Cole Hamels being a free agent after 2012 and their 2nd best under age 30 player Hunter Pence being a free agent after 2013 and really nothing else left except for the strong core of players that has led the Phillies to several playoff appearances and that is well into their 30s:
Halladay (34), Lee (33), Papelbon (31), Howard (32), Rollins (34), Utley (33), Victorino (31) and Ruiz (32) make up the core of the team along with Pence & Hamels. And this will actually remain the core for the next several years – except for possibly Hamels. Enjoy it while it lasts. And maybe this stretch of sustained winning is worth it. However, ultimately there will be an unexpected collapse in a Mets 2009ish sort of way. I´d guess in 2014.
Pence is a free agent after this year too.
Hamels, Pence, Utley, and Victorino are all set to expire after 2012. It’ll be very interesting to see what Amaro does about that. I think 2013 may be the collapse year…
I believe they control Pence for two more years.
He has just under five years of service time. Utley is signed through 2013 as well. Other than that, yeah.
by MetsFanXXIII on Feb 2, 2012 11:37 AM EST up reply actions
Ok, just rechecked Cots...
You’re right on Utley. Pence, though, is a free agent after this season.
I think their spreadsheet is wrong on Pence.
A player cannot declare free agency with less than six years of service time. He currently stands at 4.156. Thus, he won’t have enough service time next offseason. Baseball Reference has him hitting free agency prior to the 2014 season, and MLBTR doesn’t have him on their list of next offseason’s free agents either.
Nah
Baseball Reference says that he’s a free agent after 2013. He’s only got 4 years, 156 days of service time at the moment.

Umm…you think? They’ve matched our past 25 years in 5 years (5 playoffs, 2 pennants, 1 championship). If you told me right now that Sandy Alderson would build a roster that would win a World Series and then turn the team over to Omar again, I’d take it in a heartbeat.
Time to update this: 2009 Did Not Happen. Neither did 2010. Or 2011. Sports suck.

I'll be very surprised if the first big FA
signing the Mets do after trying to get their house in order the few years preceding that, is for Hamels.

Chances are we won’t be for the next 2-3 years.

I guess I'm in the minority...
I’d definitely consider signing Hamels. I know long term pitcher contracts usually end up badly but he’s only 28 and he’s a damn good pitcher. Plus, the Phillies fans’ hatred towards him would be hilarious.

do people really expect Amaro to throw his player under a bus
while simultaneously declaring that he (Amaro) is an idiot for giving away $125M?
he’s in a no-win situation: either he admits (or says nothing) he made an error and basically calls Howard a bust, who he is stuck with for 5 more years, or he lives in his fantasyland where Howard is a great player. either option is not great.
He's more an idiot
Because he said that Cole Hamels isn’t elite.

well, he's also trying to drive down Cole's price
imagine calling him elite and then offering him Weaver money. that doesn’t mesh well. it’s cognitive dissonance at its finest.
of course, all this being said, i don’t think Amaro is trying to save face in the media, i do really think he thinks all of these things (Howard is a star, Hamels is not elite). i’m just saying i would say the same things if in his shoes.
