Sabermetrics! Fantasy League is live.
Yahoo! opened their fantasy baseball season and I have renewed the league. I don't like using AA for league purposes so this will be the last FanShot about it until it's time to virtually hand out our magnificent trophy. I have sent out invite emails to last year's managers via Yahoo! so look in your inboxes. Returning managers get priority but if some decline or don't respond (Gina are you out there?) there will be available spots for those AA'ers who are interested. While I have your attention (hopefully), I have made some tweaks to last years set up. The scoring is the same but I have added a RP slot and a IF slot in an effort to counteract the SP-dominance. I am open to suggestion with regard to that IF slot. When re-uping for the league, please be sure to check the boxes for receiving league notices and message board updates. This is pretty crucial. Also, be sure to bookmark and join the Sabermetrics! League blog. This is also very important because that is where we will be deciding draft time and other important things (there are already two polls open there).

So i'm a touch confused with the keeper format (haven't played with keepers before), want to make sure I do this right.
the spreadsheet seems to suggest I get to keep one of my top 4, 2 of my my 5-9 guys, and 3 of my 10+ guys. Am I understanding this correctly?

That's how I read it.
Now I’ve never been in a keeper league before, so I’m assuming that if I protect, for example, my 2011 2nd rounder Felix Hernandez, he’ll be my pick in the 2nd round in this draft, right? But what about free agents who I picked up and want to keep? Which pick in the draft do I end up using on one of those guys, since I didn’t actually draft them?

Were you in the league last season?
Returning managers get first priority. If some decline or don’t respond then I’ll open it up to those who are interested.

All the keeper cells you see on the keeper spread sheet under your name are yours.
Every team gets 6 keepers. No more no less. You don’t forfeit anything to declare these keepers. The keeper policy was change from the very beginning so maybe that’s were the confusion is coming from.

Well technically you do lose 6 draft picks (since there are 6 keepers per team) but everyone in the league does.
I know in my hockey keeper league the commissioner makes our keepers our first few draft picks so the working first round is actually the 9th round. I believe I’ve heard him say that this is just the easiest way for him to do it.
Let me know if these clarifications have helped.

Yup. The gold "Keeper" cells represent your keeper slots. You can fill it with anyone under the cell.
Keeper standing is based off of draft position. The guys who you draft very early (presumably the best players) are tier 1, the guys you draft semi-early (presumably the good not great players) are tier 2, and the guys you draft later or pick up off the waiver wire (presumably the fringy players and prospects) are tier 3.

Right, I get that.
My question is about the guys who I picked up off waivers. Which draft picks are they going to take up? Like, for instance, I picked up John Lannan off waivers. Say that I’m a huge John Lannan fan, I love John Lannon and want to keep John Lannan on my team forever…what pick would I be using to keep him, since he wasn’t drafted by me last year?

Don't think of it in terms of picks.
You can use whatever keeper slot is above John Lannon on the spreadsheet for him. Because he’s in the bottom tier, that means technically you can use any keeper slot for him because you can move players up in tier (but not down).
I mean, yes technically keeping any player costs you a pick, but that pick is gone from the get go. What will probably end up happening is that I’ll use the first 6 rounds for keepers because I’ve heard that is the easiest way to assign them. But keeping John Lannon – sticking with your example – doesn’t cost you a 6th round pick.
And you don’t have to worry about who was a FA pickup. I’ve taken all of that into account when I made the spreadsheet (we/I decided last year that FA’s can drop one tier when put on the waiver wire provided their not picked up by the same manager).

Okay, got it.
I wasn’t sure how it worked with keepers and whether they were added in the midst of the draft or what. But yeah, adding them before the draft make much more sense.

Ahh, the classic question.
Should I retire at the top, or come back one more season to defend my title? It’s never easy being the greatest of all time. But I guess there’s my answer, the greatest players have that drive to be the best and prove themselves. My competitive spirit will not let leave… not yet, anyway.
Any spots open?
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only BLUE WALLS.

There is one but feslenraster (who I don't believe was in the league last year) has expressed interest.
