18 days left until pitchers and catchers report. 18 days left until we have a little more in the way of news to report. 18 days until baseball.
There are still a few interesting tidbits to report today. We'll start with some news out of L.A. that Steve Cohen is still likely to buy a minority share of the Mets. While Cohen is currently bidding on the Dodgers, he's certainly not guaranteed anything on that front. I suppose owning 4% of the team already wouldn't be an awful thing if he eventually jumps into the bidding for the remainder of the Wilpon's shares of the Mets.
It does sound like the Mets are having some success in selling those 4% shares of the franchise. According to reports yesterday, the Mets are expecting to finalize 10 such shares by the end of February. While that would still leave the Wilpon group with 60% of the team, it would certainly be a step in the right direction for Mets fans. I just hope that whomever the commissioner is when the Wilpons can buy these shares back (not Bud...pleease!!) is smart enough to nix any deal where they'd borrow heavily to do so. Howard Megdal took a look at the forthcoming sale as well.
I was fairly surprised by the link several days ago that pointed out the Mets having such a low number of negative WAR players since 2002. With the number of nearly worthless bench parts we've had complimenting our terrible role players I just assumed that we'd be in far worse shape. Yesterday BtB took a look at trends involving negative WAR, it's certainly an interesting read.
Jose Reyes is going to cut off his dreadlocks on TV. Alex Rodriguez once cut his toenail on the same program.
John Sickels looked back at how he graded the top 30 position players in baseball last year when they were prospects. Jose Reyes was of particular interest to me.
FanGraphs has a piece looking at the AAAA player. Definitely worth a read.
Finally for today, AA favorite (or at least former favorite) Nyjer Morgan played some hockey recently.
