Oswalt still unsigned
Presumably the Mets plan with Jon Rauch is to hope he pitches well up until the trade deadline and try to get some prospect back when a contending team is looking for bullpen arms right? Why not try the same thing with Roy Oswalt? The guy is still unsigned and is probably getting at least a little desparate since it seems like his two preferred teams St. Louis and Texas don't really need him/want him. There is the obvious money issue, but if you could get him for $8M for one year. Plus to me it seems like the easiest way for Oswalt to get on a contending team, so I doubt he would care about a no trade clause. He is just trying to rebuild his value and the Mets could use another starting pitcher and someone who could bring back better value than a Jon Rauch. Does this kinda make sense to anyone else?

I say why not
He would add depth to the squad and if he pitches well he could be good trade bait.

But what if he doesn't pitch well? (injuries...)
Then you just have dead money on your roster.

But...
Is Oswalt really worth that $8MM? He also has injury concerns. I say no.

Low ball him at the 11th hour

Probably going to have to cut that $4MM in half
And even then, that’s a lot of money for the Mets to spend right now

Even in only 140 innings last year
he was worth 2.5 fWAR, which comes to being worth around $11 million. So as long as he can pitch and pitch reasonably well, $8 million is probably going to be a good deal. And if he does get hurt, it’s only a one year contract so it’s not like it’ll kill them forever either.

They can't afford him
The max they can pay him is like 4 million so 8 isnt going to cut it

Oh yeah, I'm sure they don't want to/have the ability to spend that much money
but I’m just saying that at $8 million, it’s still a pretty good gamble. When healthy, Oswalt’s worth a lot more than $8 million dollars.

You're right.
thought you meant they should go after him.

Don't get me wrong...I'd love for them to reel in Oswalt if they had the money
but I’m a realist. I know that they likely cannot afford it now.

Well, if they trade him midseason
they would only pay half of his salary, maybe they afford him then?

They won't sign Oswalt because they don't have the money
Also why would Oswalt. Want to sign with a non contending team when he has the Red Sox and Rangers after him?

Obviously it would be a longshot to happen
especially since Oswalt seems to want to be closer to home. However if you read MLB Trade rumors at all it doesn’t seem like the Rangers or Cardinals are too interested in signing him. It would have to be a desperation move by Oswalt, and it might be getting close to that time unless he’d rather just retire.

Fenway and Arlington aren't easy to pitch in
Oswalt probably wants to build his value for another multi-year contract, and he knows that if he pitches well he could be traded to a contender anyway.

exactly
if we were talking pre-Madoff days I think we would have already talked with him and made an offer.

Mets don't have the money
and Oswalt wants to play for a contender. And presumably close to home.

It's only the last one
He turned down $10mm from the Tigers because it’s too far from his farm. Between him and Billy Wagner, the Astros clubhouse might have had the least interesting crowd in baseball history.
