This is a fitting tribute.
Glad they included the word “KID.”

As invaluable as his service was for 4.5 years
this would be the wrong move, for 3 reasons:
1) Not enough service time. Also, he played most of his career with Montreal, and his number is retired by the successor Nationals.
2) This would open up a pandora’s box, which would also result in retiring the numbers of Keith Hernandez (17), Darryl Strawberry (18), Edgardo Alfonzo (13), Dwight Gooden (16) and Jerry Koosman (36). We are not the Yankees. (Though to be fair, their retired numbers were done so thoughtfully.)
3) His stats over the span are far too comparable to several other players over a span of a similar length of time. (Carlos Beltran is one example.) Even though Carter manned a championship pitching staff behind the plate for 4+ years, there isn’t enough of a convincing argument for his number to be retired.
Lastly, though not exactly a 4th reason, we’re letting the emotional state of affairs override our better judgment if we do this. At the very least, he’s in the Mets’ Hall of Fame

Hernandez and Koosman should have their numbers retired
I don’t see a problem Strawberry and Gooden both played for the Yankees and have been an embarrassment to the Mets since retirement so maybe not them

Carter really only had one great year (1985) and one good year (1986) as a Met
He is best remembered not for his enduring greatness in the uniform but for being a part of the championship team—and a great guy. Clearly he means a lot to this franchise but the bar for having your number retired is very high.

It's ok
but I prefer the visionary brilliance evoked by another recent Mets patch:

I like sports again. Thank you Tom & Eli. The Wilpons can still go suck it.

Love the concept, hate the colors
I understand it’s a mourning patch, but it should be orange type on a blue plate (like the hats). The white-on-black is gonna look weird on the white uniforms. (And home plates aren’t black!)
Memorial patches are always black

The "MHK" patch for the Pats was blue to match the uni and it worked
I can’t believe I’m endorsing something the Pats did, but here we are.

Nice. A lot of kids will ask their dads, what does that patch mean?
Hopefully, their pops aren’t tards.
