Everybody Loves Matt Harvey Applesauce: Mets Very Impressed With Harvey, Not Impressed By Kazmir
Meet the Mets
The talk of Mets camp on Saturday was Matt Harvey, Matt Harvey and Matt Harvey. The righty pitching prospect impressed just about everybody who saw him, spoke to him, touched him and even stood next to him (okay, so maybe those last two were exaggerations) as he used a 40-pitch live batting practice session to his full advantage. Harvey showed off his arsenal, which includes an impressive curve, a new two-seam fastball and a developing changeup to go along with the excellent four-seamer he's always had.
Yesterday was the official report date for position players and SS Ruben Tejada, whose "merely" on-time arrival to camp put him in some hot water with manager Terry Collins, arrived in Miami around 3:00 PM. Tejada was scheduled to meet with Collins this morning at 8 AM in order to discuss why he did not show up early.
The Mets sent a scout to watch lefty Scott Kazmir pitch in Houston and they came away unimpressed, making it unlikely that the two sides will reunite in the near future. Oh well.
New closer Frank Francisco is excited to have the eyes of New York fans watching him and wants to do whatever he has to do to help the team win, even if that means conceding some save opportunities to Jon Rauch and Ramon Ramirez if they present a better matchup. So, does that make Francisco #TrueSABR?
Catcher Josh Thole is working on developing a more consistent stance behind the plate. First baseman Ike Davis, meanwhile, is not trying to attach a number to how many home runs he thinks he'll hit this year.
The team announced that they will wear a patch on their jerseys honoring the late Gary Carter this season. The patch is shaped like home plate and says "Kid" and "8" on it. Certainly a fitting tribute to the Kid's legacy.
Finally, the Mets released their 2012 promotional schedule, headlined by the return of Banner Day and John Franco's Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
Around the Majors
Uh oh. Ryan Howard may or may not have suffered a little setback in his recovery from a torn left achilles tendon. Manager Charlie Manuel says that he has, while GM Ruben Amaro Jr says that he hasn't. Either way, Howard is headed down to Baltimore to visit the doctor who performed the operation. Meanwhile, lefty Cliff Lee will toss a bullpen session today as he recovers from a minor abdominal injury.
The Nationals and Ryan Zimmerman did not get a contract extension worked out on Saturday but no worry. The two sides made progress and are hoping to complete a deal today, according to GM Mike Rizzo.
Alex Rodriguez says he is healthy and in-shape (though maybe not the best of his life) and he's ready to play a full season at third base for the Yankees. A-Rod had plasma-rich platelet injections in his knee and shoulder over the offseason, a treatment suggested to the veteran slugger by NBA star Kobe Bryant.
Unfortunately, Twins flamethrowing righty Joel Zumaya is not in the best shape of his life, as he felt elbow discomfort after just 13 pitches in his first Twins live batting practice session.
Finally, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine banned alcohol from the team's clubhouse, one of a handful of rules he's laying down in his first season in Boston. Now my next question is "did he ban fried chicken, too?".

You could even say that using Harvey as a mop up man
would be like having our own Mariano Rivera
Please dont rush Harvey
Please in the name of Dickey

hold on just a sec
that dominos patch was great and really made me hungry
I hate Philadelphia so much.
Looking forward to seeing Harvey pitch this spring
Wonder where he starts off to start the season AA or AAA? I am guessing probably AA, but he won’t stay there long.

i think he'll get AAA spot. His stuff is suppose to be electric i think the mets will see him up against stiff competition
also this gives me a reason to go just over the NC/SC line and see the Knights play the met affiliate. oh…and CHEAP BEER!!!
I hate Philadelphia so much.
Man, Tejada basically had to have a press conference
in order to explain why he made it to camp on time. Terry was kind of a mong on this one.

As long as we lead the league in sacrifice bunts, all will be forgiven
amirite?

Yeah, have to agree.
I like TC so far. I just hope that intensity doesn’t start to wear a bit thin if the team isn’t playing well.

I think he recognizes the kid will be under the gun from moment one, especially if he starts slow.

So his solution is to add to the pressure by being unfair?

RUBIN TEJADAY IS NO DERAK JETAR
THAT IS FOR SURE – HE DOESN’T EVEN HAVE AN STD TO HIS NAME.
One day, this team is going to kill me.
Please
sell these Kid 8 jerseys that include the 50 year anniversary patch. I want one.
Is it official? Have we now started the clock on counting down the days until Harvey makes his debut? #HarveyWatch

As long as the Minaya/Bernazard/Manuel squad is not in charge of the promotion
I feel good about #HarveyWatch.

The Promotion Day I'm Interested In
For my two games this year is “Dickey possible no hitter day.” Not saying he’ll do it, but he’s a guy with a chance. Maybe the best chance since Gooden.
A no hitter would make this probable disaster of a season
An all time awesome season. Make it happen, RA!

if we went 1-161 with a perfect game or no hitter, it'd be worth it (plus we'd destroy the old record for W/L)

god that be awful.
but R.A. did call the no-no breaking last season if i remember right.
Dickey be praised.
I hate Philadelphia so much.
Which will come first?
a) Mets no-hitter; or
b) completion of the AA Top 50 Mets list (either one).

Ha! Trick question.
The correct answer is neither.

Zimmerman
Is basically set to be a Nat for life, or at least until 2020. It makes me sad that the Mets happen to be in this financial morass right when Jose’s contract was up. I know we’re all trying to get over it, but that loss is gonna sting for a while.

It was an extension
If he was a free agent, I can almost guarantee that he’d be making a lot more than that, possibly for another team as well.

Dubs is more likely to accept a hometown discount for an extension.

Im really looking forward to seeing what a healthy dubs can do with the walls in the proper place now.
Could be an epic year for him

Shouldn't this whole Tejada situation just been a casual 30 second conversation
when he showed up at camp?
Look at it this way
Ruben was early compared to Rickey Henderson.
