Squished The Fish Applesauce: Jon Niese Excellent, Marlins President Runs His Mouth

Even though the games don't count, I rarely get as excited for much as I do for the first few spring training games of the year. We haven't had baseball in entirely too long, we get to see kids we don't normally see very often, and there's always hope that certain players will suddenly see everything click and become stars. Yesterday was one of those days that really makes me happy. The Mets won, played very well, and nobody really seemed to have a bad day. The boxscore from the 7-0 victory can be found here, the recap can be found here.

Jon Niese started the game for the Metsies yesterday, and he looked pretty good in the process. One reason for his nice outing could be his new nose. A more relevant reason might, in fact, be his new changeup. It seems like we've seen this same narrative before, so hopefully it's got a different ending than the Mike Pelfrey splitter story.

Marlins President David Samson had some strong words about Miami residents. He also said professional athlete Jose Reyes signed with the Marlins only for the money. That franchise seems to be run by some awful people.

There is a little injury news to report this morning. Andres Torres will sit out today's game due to soreness, but honestly that's probably nothing to be concerned about. Captain Kirk will start in his place. Pedro Beato will undergo an MRI today as well. Hopefully it's nothing serious, but Beato really seems destined to start this season in Buffalo when it begins.

One pitcher that will likely be joining Beato in Buffalo in Jenrry Mejia. Mejia has been mostly out of the spotlight this spring as he continues to recover from Tommy John surgery. That's definitely a good thing, as his secondary offerings certainly haven't gotten any better in his time away from pitching.

There's still Bobby Parnell needs to make the bullpen stories floating around out there. We all know he was less than dominant in his audition as the closer last summer, but is there anyone out there that honestly believes we have 7 relief pitchers out there that are better than Parnell? I really hate the "proven closer" tag, all the more reason to hope Frank Francisco is absolutely awesome this season.

We found out this week that the Mets will have to pay back the 83 millionish in profits that they made from the Madoff scheme. The times takes a look at whether or not the Wilpon's wealth will be a hindrance in their upcoming jury trial about the other 300 million involved in the suit.

Around the rest of the league:

The A's and Giants have been mired in a territorial dispute for what seems like forever. While reports came out the other day that Buddy boy had decided to deny the A's request to move to San Jose, A's ownership is now disputing it. What a mess.

Dontrelle Willis has been struggling with arm issues early in spring training. Even though he's a Phillie, I'll always be a Willis fan. I just can't believe how far and how fast he's fallen. It really is a sad story.

While Willis is a former fish, the minnows will have a new home in a few weeks. They played a few exhibitions this week, here are some photos and thoughts about the new tank.

Finally for today, Yu Darvish made his debut for the Rangers. He was kind of awesome.
