The final score of a spring training game is of far less import than the individual performances of players. Yet it's still satisfying to see the Mets take down the Braves no matter the game's significance.
Today's star was Matt Harvey, who tossed two perfect innings, highlighted by a strikeout of Jason Heyward on a 95 mph fastball. It was an improvement over his shaky Monday debut, during which he walked three and hit a batter. He was impressive, according to firsthand reports. Harvey should be given the chance to properly develop as a starter and it's reassuring that those in charge of guiding such development have the baseline competence to recognize it. He will not be the 2012 eighth inning guy.
Harvey followed starter Dillon Gee, who struck out two in his three innings of work but allowed three runs on five hits. Three of those hits went for extra bases. Lefty Josh Edgin finished the game with a scoreless ninth inning, notching a strikeout in the process. Edgin is 25 years old and not in major league camp, but Paul DePodesta is high on him. Check out Rob Castellano's profile of potential 2012 big leaguer Edgin right here.
The offensive highlight today was Matt den Dekker's tie-breaking two-run triple in the eighth inning. The rest of the Mets' runs came in the second inning on a Mike Baxter RBI single and Ronny Cedeno two-RBI single. Rubber-armed Eric O'Flaherty, Jonny Venters and Craig Kimbrel struck out six in three scoreless innings for the Braves.
The Mets travel to Viera to play the Nationals tomorrow at 1:05pm. WFAN has the radio broadcast.
