This is just guesswork on my part, but I saw two players today that we could try and get if we do decide to trade Pelfrey. Marlon Byrd of the Cubs is available, and his salary is $6.5 million as compared to Pelf's $5.6 million. I rather have Byrd than Torres in center honestly. The second trade target is Kevin Gregg of the Orioles, who is making the same as Pelfrey. My general rule of thumb is that I don't take too much stock into Spring Training stats, but with Francisco and Rauch struggling, maybe that would be acceptable. Maybe Gregg plus a minor leaguer would be good enough for us to trade Pelf.
Overall I prefer Byrd and paying an extra 900k than a wash with Gregg, because a starter is inherently more valuable than a reliever. Thoughts?
