Make-The-Mets-O-Meter, Week 4: Hitters

Mike from Whitestone is on the line to catch this baseball.

The Mets' roster was, for the most part, set when spring training began. The infield would feature Josh Thole, Ike Davis, Daniel Murphy, David Wright, and Ruben Tejada. The trio of Jason Bay, Andres Torres, and Lucas Duda would man the outfield. While there were some injury hiccups along the way, all of those players should be in the Opening Day lineup.

On the bench, Scott Hairston had a spot all but guaranteed, and it looks like he'll take it despite missing most of spring training with a strained oblique. Ronny Cedeno and Justin Turner had spots on the team, too. There were only two roster spots truly up for grabs: a catcher to back up Thole and a fifth outfielder or utility-type player.

Player Comment
Mike Baxter, OF Mike from Whitestone appears to have made the team as the fifth outfielder after getting on base at a decent clip in spring games.
Matt den Dekker, OF When the center field situation looked confusing at best, den Dekker was brought back to big league camp. It seems Andres Torres and Scott Hairston should both be ready for Opening Day, though, and den Dekker will get everyday playing time in the minors.
Rob Johnson, C Johnson failed to make the team despite a reasonable .758 spring OPS.
Adam Loewen, OF After starting spring with a bang, Loewen struggled over the past few weeks and was moved to minor league camp.
Lucas May, C It's official: May will start the year in the minors.
Mike Nickeas, C None of the backup catchers stood out in spring training, but Nickeas will be Josh Thole's backup.
Vinny Rottino, OF/C Rottino could provide flexibility with his glove, but he struggled to get on base or hit for extra bases in spring games and will start the year in Buffalo.
Jordany Valdespin, 2B He had a pretty good spring, but he'll get regular time in the minors.
