Mets Player Performance Meter, Week 4: Hitters

Angel who?

As they won five of their past six games, the Mets scored 5.5 runs per game. In the National League, the team ranks third in average and on-base percentage, eighth in slugging, and fifth in wOBA. Coming into the season, offense was supposed to be the Mets' strength, and it looked the part this week. Stats below cover games from May 4 through May 9.

Player Last Week This Week Comment
Mike Baxter, OF Tough to read anything into four plate appearances.
Jason Bay, LF Bay apparently had the flu on top of his broken rib this week. Ouch.
Ronny Cedeno, IF Cedeno should be back from the DL soon, which would be nice since Ruben Tejada's out.
Ike Davis, 1B For much of the week, Ike struggled, but here's hoping his monster home run in Philly is the start of the hot streak he's long overdue to have.
Lucas Duda, RF The Dude didn't hit much, and when he did, he hit singles. His .353 OBP saves him from the red arrow this week.
Scott Hairston, OF Well, he's not going to hit for the cycle on a regular basis.
Rob Johnson, C Johnson went 1-for-3 with a walk in his lone game played.
Daniel Murphy, 2B At .423/.423/.500, Murph was slightly more than a singles hitter this week. Singles still work so long as he gets on base this often.
Mike Nickeas, C All things considered, a .708 OPS from Nickeas is acceptable.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis, OF While his batting average continues its descent to earth, Captain Kirk still got on base at a .400 clip thanks to 4 BB, which helped balance his team-high 6 K.
Vinny Rottino, IF Hitless in four plate appearances.
Ruben Tejada, SS That was one ugly trip and fall at first base. Get well soon.
Josh Thole, C Concussions are no joke, and Thole hit the 7-day DL after Ty Wigginton's shoulder collided with his head on a play at the plate. He'll be out a while.
Andres Torres, CF He was a little slow in his return from the DL, but he was the Mets' best hitter this week at .409/.519/.682 with 5 BB and just 1 K. Good enough for the green arrow despite making two outs on the bases.
Justin Turner, IF .154/.154/.231, woof.
Jordany Valdespin, IF Could have gone 1-for-20 and gotten the green arrow since that 1 was a go-ahead, three-run home run in Philadelphia against Jonathan Papelbon.
David Wright, 3B With as many extra-base hits as strikeouts - three - Wright put together another excellent week at the plate.
