Mets Place Josh Thole On DL With Concussion, Call Up Rob Johnson From Buffao

Pre-smash.

Mets catcher Josh Thole has been placed on the 7-day disabled list, which was instituted last season specifically for concussions. He suffered the concussion when he was Icebox-ed by Ty Wigginton in the bottom of the eighth during last night's game against the Phillies at Citizen's Bank Park. Thole was removed from the game after the collision and reported feeling dizzy and general wonkiness later in the evening. There is no roadmap for Thole's return just yet, but the move gives the Mets some roster flexibility while doctors evaluate their catcher's brain jelly.

The collision with Wigginton was clean, but video replays clearly showed Thole's head being smashed by the meaty shoulder of the Phillies' infielder (and former Met). It was a key play in the game, however, as it prevented the go-ahead run from scoring in what was a 2-2 game at the time.

To take Thole's spot on the big league team, the Mets have purchased the contract of catcher Rob Johnson from Triple-A Buffalo. Johnson, who hails from the awesomely named Anaconda, Montana, was hitting .291/.317/.491 in 55 at-bats with the Bisons. To make room for Johnson on the 40-man roster, the Mets moved reliever Pedro Beato from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL.
