Baseball games don't get much uglier than the Mets' series finale against the Dodgers this evening. Both teams did their best to give away outs and runs on defense, but the Mets were far inferior to the Dodgers in that effort and lost the game as a result.
Dillon Gee went six innings and allowed four runs, only two of which were earned. The Mets had leads of 1-0 and 3-1 in the game, the latter of which was thanks to a pair of errors by Dodgers shortstop Dee Gordon, but they were still within reach when they entered the bottom of the seventh trailing 4-3. Unfortunately, the bullpen took over and gave up four runs in the bottom of the inning, and the game was essentially over.
We knew it was over when...
Miguel Batista entered the game with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh, induced a comebacker, and made a throw to the plate that Mike Nickeas botched. Two runs scored on the play, and the inning continued.
What else?
Despite the Dodgers' pathetic lineup, taking three out of four games at Dodger Stadium still makes the Mets' weekend a success.
