Josh Edgin To Join Mets On Friday

Edgin

The Mets have announced that they'll purchase Josh Edgin's contract from Buffalo and that the 25-year old left-handed reliever will join the team when the second half gets underway on Friday.

Edgin initially opened eyes during Spring Training in a lights-out stint with the big club. After dominating Double-A hitters for six games to open the season, the 2010 30th-round pick posted a 3.89 ERA in 37 innings for Triple-A Buffalo.

Despite struggling with his command a bit more following the promotion (4.38 BB/9), his strikeout rate is actually up (9.73 K/9). Additionally, left-handed hitters are batting a paltry .220 against him and have struck out at nearly a 45% rate.

Coming into the season, I ranked Edgin as the 28th best prospect in the Mets farm system. In his review I said:

"...Ultimately, Edgin's strong low 90's fastball and excellent low 80's slider as well as his solid command are what give him a chance to move fast. Paul DePodesta even hinted that we could potentially see Edgin in Queens in 2012 if things break right..."

Anytime a player that the organization drafted reaches the show it's a good thing; but the fact that the Mets are able to turn to a former 30th rounder to provide support is a nice win for the club.

Presumably Edgin will take the spot on the 40-man roster vacated by Chris Schwinden after he cleared waivers earlier this week, acting as the second lefty out of the bullpen to spell Tim Byrdak. In terms of the Active Roster, Edgin is likely to replace Dillon Gee when he officially hits the Disabled List on Friday with his blood clot issue.
