David Wright gave the Mets a lead they would not relinquish with a first-inning, two-run home run off Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez today. Wright added a three-run bomb in the fourth inning for good measure, capping the Mets scoring to give his team a 9-1 lead. He was the hitting star in a lineup which featured five players who notched two hits on the day.
R.A. Dickey turned in a solid performance, eating up 7.1 innings while giving up four runs on ten hits. He allowed a solo home run to Ryan Zimmerman in the first inning and worked out of trouble in several other frames. He walked just one, a welcome development given the score. Bobby Parnell putz'd around in the ninth inning but finished the game after allowing one run.
The win snapped the Mets' six-game losing streak and prevented them from falling to .500 for the first time since May 4th.
We knew it was over after...
Wright's three-run homer in the fourth inning. Eight-run lead + Dickey on the mound = put it in the books.
What else?
- Gonzalez lasted just 3.1 innings, his shortest outing of the season. He averages under six innings per start. Compare to Dickey's nearly seven innings per start.
- Ike Davis had a day, going 2-for-4 with a home run off the southpaw Gonzalez.
- Wright drew a walk in addition to his two home runs, raising his slash line to .353/.443/.586.
- Andres Torres was on base three times, going 2-for-4 with a walk. He has looked better of late.
