So after watching the latest Johan Santana meltdown in his last start everyone started stating that maybe he needs more rest and that perhaps throwing all those pitches in the no hitter hurt him. However going back to all the games I've watched it seems as if every time Johan gets extra rest whether its given from Terry Collins or falls in line with a day off in the schedule he seems to suck. So I decided to dig into the stats....
Crap...does anyone know how to post pictures from my computer onto these things??? Anyway....
Going through each of Johan's starts and the amount of rest he received between each start I collected the following data.
On days when Johan starts on "normal" 4 days rest he has pitched to this stat line:
56 IP, 29 H, 6 ER, 18 BB, 45 K, 0.96 ERA, 0.839 WHIP
Compared to when Johan starts on "extra" rest of 5 days or more:
51.2 IP, 66 H, 37 ER, 17 BB, 57 K, 6.50 ERA, 1.621 WHIP
**Note: this data does NOT include his most recent start which was on 4 days rest but included an ankle injury.**
