Quick Recap: Mets 3, Diamondbacks 1 — Harvey Strikes Out Eleven As Mets Win

Matt Harvey put on quite a show in his major league debut against the Diamondbacks this evening. With eleven strikeouts, Harvey broke the Mets' all-time record for strikeouts in a major league debut. Before tonight, Tom Seaver and Bill Denehy shared the record — each pitcher struck out eight in 1967. Harvey also walked three, allowed three hits, and did not allow a run.

The Mets' lineup gave Harvey an immediate cushion when Scott Hairston plated two runs with a double in the top of the first. They tacked on a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Rob Johnson, too.

When Harvey left the game, there were runners on first and second with one out in the sixth, but Josh Edgin entered the game and threw 1.2 perfect innings. Jon Rauch recorded two outs in the eighth but allowed a walk, a double, and a sacrifice fly. Tim Byrdak took his place with a runner on second and two outs, and he hit Miguel Montero with a pitch before striking out Lyle Overbay to get out of the inning.

We knew it was over when...

Bobby Parnell, who issued two walks in the ninth, recorded the game-ending strikeout, his third of the inning.

What else?

  • Scott Hairston went 3-for-4 on the night, which should come as no surprise since the Diamondbacks started a left-handed pitcher.
  • Ruben Tejada and Andres Torres had two hits apiece.
