NEW YORK, NY - JULY 04: Chris Young #55 of the New York Mets pitches against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field on July 4, 2012 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City. (Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images)
The Mets had a 2-0 lead after six innings, but it was all downhill from there. Chris Young was very good through six innings, but he very quickly gave up a two-run home run to Chase Utley and a solo shot to Carlos Ruiz in the seventh inning to give the Phillies the lead. We've seen Young do this before.
Young finished the seventh inning, but the bullpen trio of Miguel Batista, Tim Byrdak, and Jeremy Hefner combined to surrender six more runs to the hated Phillies.
We knew it was over when...
Miguel Batista took the mound to begin the eighth inning with the Mets trailing by just one run. Terry Collins should not use Batista in high-leverage situations, which has been obvious since he first proposed the idea nearly a month ago.
What else?
The Mets' pair of runs came on a solo home run by Scott Hairston and a bloop single by David Wright.
