Quick Recap: Nationals 5, Mets 2 — Hefner And Offense Struggle

Danny Espinosa cordially greets the Nationals' third-base coach after homering against Hefner.

After a two-hour-twenty-six-minute rain delay, the Mets lost to the Nationals again this afternoon. Jeremy Hefner allowed five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and no walks in five innings of work, and the Mets were only able to plate one run against Gio Gonzalez and one run against the Nationals' bullpen despite the fact that they had plenty of baserunners.

The Mets' bullpen kept the team in the game as Manny Acosta, Josh Edgin, and Bobby Parnell combined for three scoreless innings, but like last Friday night, there was no comeback in the cards for the Mets.

We knew it was over when...

Tyler Clippard retired David Wright to end the game. Clippard has had his struggles against the Mets in the past so anything was possible. Maybe.

What else?

  • The Mets went just 2-4 on their six-game road trip through Cincinnati and Washington, and they are now seven games under .500.
  • Andres Torres killed a praying mantis during the game. That's poor, Andres.
  • Daniel Murphy struck out in a pinch-hit appearance and got ejected for arguing balls and strikes.
