Quick Recap: Mets 9, Giants 1: Amazins Zi-Toast Barry

Nice try hiding behind that glove, Barry. (Ed Szczepanski-US PRESSWIRE)

The Mets scored early and often against Barry Zito and the Giants' bullpen, en route to a rare drama-free win (unless Jordany Valdespin's shirt incident counts as drama). Zito was pelted for 4 two-out runs in the first inning, and the Amazins never looked back from that point. They eventually hung 7 runs on Zito's ledger, knocking him out in the fifth, and hung two more on reliever Shane Loux. Five of the runs were driven in by Ronny Cedeno, two others by Jason Bay (not a typo), while Chris Young contributed a serviceable, Chris Young-ish start. It was a welcome sight from a team whose other two wins in this series only a mother could love. Having taken three of four in San Francisco, the Mets will conclude their road trip with three games in San Diego.

We knew it was over when...

Jason Bay drove in the first two runs in the top of the first. When Jason Bay drives in runs against you--multiple runs!--you know it's not your day.

What else?

  • When the Mets loaded the bases in the top of the first--their fourth consecutive inning doing so, going back to last night's game--the anguish in Howie Rose's voice was palpable. He clearly anticipated a repeat of Wednesday's LOB-athon.
  • If you were listening to this game on the radio, you would have clearly heard a fan taunting the visitors throughout the early going. I've determined that AT&T Park is the king of this: The weird loudmouth fan who can be distinctly heard in the radio booth. This is especially odd since the Giants tend to sell out their games, so one lone crank shouldn't be so audible. And yet, here we are.
