Quick Recap: Rockies 1, Mets 0 — Five Runs Scored In Four Games Against The Worst Pitching Staff In The League

It would be nice to celebrate Collin McHugh's fantastic debut along with a Mets win but you can't have it all. You can't have much of anything with the Mets' offense right now. McHugh threw seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out nine and walking one. Atta boy, Collin. Unfortunately, his teammates were unable to get anything going at the plate for the fourth game in a row against the worst pitching staff in the National League. And it wasn't for a lack of baserunners; the Mets reached base thirteen times today. The extra-base hits and clutch hits just didn't come. Of the Mets' seven hits, only one went for extra bases (a double by Ruben Tejada in the eighth inning). They went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position, including two consecutive fly-outs by Daniel Murphy and David Wright to end the game with pinch-runner Andres Torres on second base (Torres ran for Justin Turner, who had previously singled). The sample-size gods are exacting their vengeance for the Mets' ultra-clutch first half of the season. Or something.

Bobby Parnell allowed the decisive run in the eighth inning with some help from Jordany Valdespin, who was starting in center field for just the fifth time this season. Tyler Colvin led off the frame and lined one to center which looked catchable. However, Valdespin misplayed it and it went over his head for a triple. Chris Nelson singled home Colvin a few pitches later to give the Rockies the only run they would need.

This loss completes a four-game sweep at the hands of the last-place Rockies. The Mets are now 57-68.
