Quick Recap: Mets 5, Marlins 3 — A Deficit, A Rally, And A Win

Stay connected for news and updates

I guess this is how somebody pitches.

In what looked to be another merciless defeat to Josh Johnson, the Mets managed just three hits and a run against the Marlins' ace through eight innings and faced a 3-1 deficit against Miami's bullpen in the ninth. Then Lucas Duda knocked in a run with a single to center. Then Mike Baxter fouled out for the second out of the inning. Then Andres Torres walked to load the bases. Then Kelly Shoppach Shop-Vac-ed the bases, stroking a single to center that scored David Wright from third, pinch-runner Jason Bay from second, and, on an error by center fielder Justin Ruggiano, Torres from first. Shoppach stood on third and the Mets stood atop the Marlins with a 5-3 lead which frankly Frank Francisco would protect in the bottom of the ninth.

Too little, too late, perhaps, but six wins in seven games feels much better than the alternative.

We knew it was over when...

Shoppach did that thing in the top of the ninth.
