Quick Recap: Brewers 9, Mets 6 — Circling The Drain

Oof.

Jenrry Mejia made his first start of the season for the Mets, and his performance was noteworthy for its failure to evoke anything positive that could be said on its behalf. In just three-plus innings, Mejia allowed five runs on six hits and five walks. He didn't strike anybody out. Not a single Brewer hitter swung and missed at a ball Mejia threw. His game score of 22 seems far too generous. I suppose if there's any silver lining it's that seven of the nine outs he recorded came on ground balls, but celebrating that fact is like applauding the neighbor's dog for the balance he showed while taking a dump on your lawn.

For their part, the Mets' offense was life-like for the second-straight game, banging out six runs on ten hits while coaxing five walks. They even held a 1-0 lead after the top of the first and a 4-1 lead after the top of the fourth, but each time Mejia failed to hold the lead, allowing the Brewers to pull ahead to stay in the latter frame.

We knew it was over when...

Lucas Duda was called out on strikes for the second out of the ninth on a calf-high pitch with Jordany Valdespin on deck with the would-be tying run.

What else?

  • Valdespin saw 26 pitches in his five plate appearances. I'm as confounded as you are.
  • David Wright went 0-for-3 but walked twice to keep his on-base percentage above .400.
  • Ike Davis hit his 27th home run of the year in the ninth; he went 3-for-4 with a walk overall.
