How the Mets Can Contend in 2013

It's a very optimistic idea for 2013, but it is a reachable one. Sandy Alderson has the Mets moving in a direction that most seem comfortable with. They're set up to compete in 2014 and beyond, but as fan we don't look that far down the road. We want the results now. And after all we've been through, we deserve it. Many experts and analysts will say the Mets can't be a surprise team this year. Most of us would say the same. But lets see the ways they can contend in 2013.

1) A huge impact from the rookies: Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler and Travis D'Arnuad are all expected to be apart of the roster in 2013. If these guys perform better than exceptions they will be a huge part of Mets success. It isn't too far fetched to see a 15 win season out of Harvey, a 10 win season out of Wheeler and somewhere in the area of .270 with 15 HRs for D'Arnuad. With these types of numbers, these three will make the Mets better than expected and take some of the pressure off of guys like Wright, Davis and Santana. With that, it will allow this team to believe they can get it done.

2) Sandy Alderson is on his phone a lot: The entire year, Sandy has to been on the phone trying to make the team better for 2013 and beyond. Moving prospects like Gorski and Flores isn't out of the question if the return is there. Alderson has done a wonderful job so far, and needs to build on that success this year.

3) Johan Santana returns to Cy-Young form: This doesn't mean he wins 20 games and wins the Cy-Young, it just means he puts together a full, # 2 starter caliber season. 15 wins is a very reachable goal and an All-Star appearance this year is another possibility.

4) Luck: We all know the flaws this team has and its going to require a lot for these things to occur, but luck is also going to be key. With teams like Atlanta and Washington, it's no easy walk to an NL East crown. But with these things and just a bit of luck (which the Mets deserve after 2006 and the collapses of 07 and 08) this Mets team can compete.

I would like to hear what you guys think are the keys to the Mets contending in 2013 (if you think they can). This is my first post here as well so it is a pleasure to join you guys and to connect with like-minded Mets fans. Go Mets!
