New York Mets related news and links for January 17, 2013
The Mets had been linked to former closer Brian Wilson and his ridiculous beard, having watched him throw recently. It doesn't sound like they were particularly impressed, so I wouldn't expect to see Wilson in the Mets bullpen this year.
The Mets and Scott Hairston are reportedly nowhere near a deal at this point. Hairston is still believed to be looking for two years, while the Mets seem to be stuck on one with a relatively low salary. The Mets have also got a relatively risk-free offer on the table for Daisuke Matsuzaka, who wouldn't seem like a terrible addition on a minor league deal.
Yesterday at AA:
Eric talked a bit about some former Mets' players that we may have forgotten about, and Rob took a look at some prospects that may or may not eventually fit into that discussion.
There was one big move made yesterday, as the A's, Mariners, and Nationals got together on a three team TRAID. Michael Morse went to Seattle, but the Mariners paid a pretty steep price for a platoon hitter without any sort of value in the field.
To make room for John Jaso, the A's ended DFA'd George Kottaras. I'd be pretty happy if the Mets took a flier on him, as he'd be a nice piece to have to help keep Travis d'Arnaud in Las Vegas for the start of the season.
Matt Harrison and the Rangers agreed to an extension that will keep him in Texas for a while. The deal buys out his final two years of arbitration, as well as three seasons after that.
