Mets Morning News: Enjoy The Silence

Denny Medley-US PRESSWIRE

Your Wednesday morning dose of New York Mets and Major League Baseball news, notes, and links.

Meet the Mets

Since nothing is going on with the team at the moment, it's time for some fluff pieces. Marc Carig wrote about Zack Wheeler and his drive to succeed in the majors.

Recently signed catcher Landon Powell has overcome quite a bit in his life to get to this point.

The date of Banner Day is going to be moved and the Mets have put it up to an online fan vote.

Matt Harvey finds himself on the 2013 Verducci Effect list. OH THE HORROR! Of course, it's probably not a real thing.

Around the Majors

The Phillies have added "outfielder" Delmon Young to the mix, signing the veteran to a $750,000 contract. Young is still pretty young but he was quite awful in 2012 with the Tigers, he's a poor defender, and he's actually going to start in right field. Also, there was that whole anti-Semitic statement thing.

The Dodgers and Time Warner are expected to start their own cable channel for the team with a deal being worth well over $6 billion. Meanwhile, the Mets can only afford minor leaguers. Ugh.

The Cubs presented a plan to renovate Wrigley Field and the team put out some preliminary conceptual drawings.

Francisco Liriano apparently broke his arm after falling in the bathroom. I wonder if he was also carrying deer meat and washing his truck in the bathroom.

Former big leaguer Elijah Dukes was arrested again recently.

Yesterday At AA

Steve Sypa put out a comprehensive guide to the World Baseball Classic rosters.

Eno Sarris looks at the two ways that the Mets have counted payroll.

Michael Donato wonders whether the Sunday Night Baseball schedule is fair to the Mets.

Chris McShane writes about the Mets putting the date of Banner Day up to a vote.

David Moseder recounts when the Mets acquired Bernard Gilkey from the Cardinals.
