Mets Morning News: Loans Get Refinanced, Can They Acquire Some Good Players Now?

Marc Serota

Your Saturday morning dose of New York Mets and Major League Baseball news, notes, and links.

Meet the Mets

With news that the Mets have taken on some more loans, it looks like the Wilpons should have around an extra $160 million that could go towards the team. Of course, that's certainly not a given considering the way they've been run in recent years.

Sad news from the blogosphere, as everybody's favorite sandwich/Mets blogger Ted Berg has announced that he's leaving SNY. First R.A. Dickey gets traded and now this? Cheap, classless Mets! Anyway, good luck with your new gig, Ted!

Around the Majors

Buck Showalter is expected to get a three-year contract extension from the Orioles soon.

Dontrelle Willis is back! The lefty has agreed to a minor league deal with the Cubs, the organization with which he was originally drafted.

Cross another lefty reliever off the list, as the Dodgers and J.P. Howell have agreed to a one-year, $500 billion $2.85 million deal.

The Rangers have an offer out to Lance Berkman, who would presumably DH for them.

At Fangraphs, Dave Cameron tries to prove that Justin Upton is not a Chase Field mirage despite a large home/road split over his career.

Yesterday At AA

Eno runs down whether the refinancing of the Wilpon debt is good news or bad news.

James reviews the top Fanposts here at Amazin' Avenue in the last calendar year. I recommend reading through as many of them as you can.

Brock tells us that Darryl Strawberry fell off the Hall of Fame ballot on January 4, 2005.
