Los Angeles Angels claim Robert Carson, Mets outright Sean Henn and Greg Burke

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets cleared up three spots on their 40-man roster by jettisoning the relief pitchers.

Earlier today, the New York Mets announced several personnel moves had been made. Left-handed relief pitcher Robert Carson was claimed by the Los Angeles Angels, while left-handed pitcher Sean Henn and right-handed pitcher Greg Burke were outrighted. These moves, though minor, begun the process for the Mets to clear space on their 40-man roster.

Greg Burke saw the most time with the Mets this year, appearing in 32 games with a 5.68 ERA. Burke was a likely cut from the outset, as below-replacement-level relief pitchers have become a commodity in Sandy Alderson's tenure.

In his second year in the majors, Carson did little to improve from his 2012 campaign, having made just 14 appearances to the tune of a 8.24 ERA. Carson displayed flashes of nice stuff and a lively fastball, but he gave up a staggering 9 home runs in brief time in the big leagues.

Sean Henn will likely be one of the least-remembered Mets of all time. Henn made 4 appearances for the Mets, grabbing a respectable 3.38 ERA, but they all came in a forgettable month of September.

Burke and Henn were likely cuts, but losing Carson, though likely not a tremendous detriment to the 2014 team, is curious. In his minor league career, Carson pitched very well before his first MLB call-up. But it's tough to stick around when you give up home runs at such a high clip.
