Tender Or Non-Tender: Ike Davis

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Spor

Formerly the Mets' first baseman of the future, Ike Davis will likely be tendered a contract but is no sure thing for the Mets' 2014 roster.

Of all the Mets’ arbitration-eligible players this winter, Ike Davis has gotten the most attention. With a terrible year that made his disappointing 2012 season look good, Davis made first base a big question mark going forward. With a projected salary of $3.5 million, he won’t break the bank, but he might not be worth his salary, either.

Davis hit .205/.326/.334 this season, which believe it or not was good enough for a 90 wRC+. But that put Davis 36th out of the 42 first basemen who had 300 plate appearances this year, and one of the few players who trailed him was Yuniesky Betancourt, who inexplicably started at first base regularly for the Brewers.

The Mets reportedly have no interest in non-tendering Davis, though. He’ll turn 27 in March, and despite his struggles, it’s probably not worth giving up on him for nothing. With a 32 home run season in 2012, a relatively modest salary, and one more year of team control after 2014, perhaps another team will be interested in buying low.
