Mets Morning News: 28 teams down, 2 more to go

Al Bello

Your Sunday morning dose of New York Mets and Major League Baseball news, notes, and links.

Meet the Mets

Wally Backman is expected to stay in the organization, as the Mets have not been asked by any other organization to speak with him. I'm sure people will still scream about how Sandy's making a huge mistake not making him the Mets' manager just because he played on the 1986 Mets.

Yesterday At AA

Jeff Paternostro wrote about catching prospect Kevin Plawecki.

Around the Playoffs

Shane Victorino's grand slam in the seventh inning gave the Red Sox a 5-2 lead in game six of the ALCS that Boston would not relinquish, as they defeated the Tigers by that score to punch a ticket to the World Series. Koji Uehara was named the ALCS MVP and the interview at the end of the game with Uehara and his son Kaz was pretty great.

Baseball will now take a break until Wednesday evening, when the Cardinals and Red Sox open up game one of the World Series in Boston.

Around the Majors

Jon Heyman reported yesterday that the Astros could make a play for outfielder Shin-Soo Choo this offseason.

Buster Olney says that the Dodgers offered Clayton Kershaw a contract in the $300 million range earlier in the season but the two sides were unable to finish the talks.

The Cubs have Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo on their radar for their open managerial position, but it sounds like Rick Renteria of the Padres may be the favorite for the job.

Officials say that a ban on home plate collisions in the majors is seen as likely. Probably a good idea at this point.

Well, this is weird. The wife of Mariners' outfielder Carlos Peguero is facing federal wire-fraud charges for using a debit card belonging to the wife of Mariners' ace Felix Hernandez over a span of three months. Maria Peguero used Sandra Hernandez's debit card to purchase over $180,000 in merchandise online from Saks Fifth Avenue. That's sure going to be awkward in spring training.
