Mets Rumors: Team unlikely to reach a deal with LaTroy Hawkins before he tests free agency

One of New York's most trusted relievers is reportedly going to hit the open market once the World Series is over.

General manager Sandy Alderson has been maligned by some fans for his failure to construct a dependable bullpen, but one of his wiser moves last winter was the singing of veteran relief pitcher LaTroy Hawkins. The 40-year-old had a 2.93 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 70⅔ innings with the Mets last season, but the team is unlikely to reach a deal for 2014 with Hawkins before the beginning of free agency.

Mutual interest remains in a potential reunion next season for LaTroy Hawkins and the Mets. But according to a source, a deal is unlikely before the veteran reliever reaches the open market.

MLB teams are allowed to exclusively negotiate with their own potential free agents until five days after the World Series. After that, players can shop around.

Hawkins turns 41 years old in December, so it wouldn't be shocking to see him reach a one-year deal with a team that is considered a "contender." After displaying his ability to efficiently retire hitters with the Mets in 2013, Hawkins should find his services in demand by a variety of suitors.
