Matt Harvey undergoes successful Tommy John surgery

The Mets' ace had his elbow repaired by the renowned Dr. James Andrews.

The Mets announced that Matt Harvey underwent successful Tommy John surgery today to repair the partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. The surgery was performed by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews.

With that, Harvey's recovery is officially underway. The Mets don't expect him back until the beginning of the 2015 season, which gives him well over a year to get his arm back in shape. In the best-case scenarios, pitchers return from the surgery in just under a year, but even the speediest of recoveries would likely end too late for Harvey to rejoin the Mets in 2014.

A Cy Young Award contender this year until he was diagnosed with the injury, Harvey was dominant. He threw 178.1 innings over 26 starts and had a 2.27 ERA and 2.00 FIP. His strikeout, walk, and home run rates were all excellent. For now, though, Harvey, the Mets, and Mets fans will have to wait awhile to see him pitch again.
