The Mets have announced that pitching phenom and all-around super guy Matt Harvey will indeed undergo elbow surgery:
After further consultation with docs, Matt Harvey has elected to have surgery to repair a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Dr. James Andrews will perform the surgery later this month.
We learned in late August about his partially torn UCL and the writing was seemingly on the wall when Harvey met with Dr. Andrews in September, even though he decided at the time that he would attempt rehab. Just a couple of weeks ago, Mets GM Sandy Alderson suggested that Harvey could pitch in the Arizona Fall League.
We now know that the outlook is as bad as we had originally feared, that the Mets' best pitcher will go under the knife and likely miss the entire 2014 season in recovery. Godspeed, Matt Harvey. We'll see you soon.
