Mets Morning News: It's a very sad Harvey Day

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Your Saturday morning dose of New York Mets and Major League Baseball news, notes, and links.

Meet the Mets

The biggest news in Metsland yesterday was that Matt Harvey will in fact undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow later this month. Both Sandy Alderson and David Wright gave their takes on the news and both said that Harvey made the right decision. It's sad news for the 2014 Mets but they still have a season to play, so what should they do? Mets fans won't accept a lost 2014 even without Harvey, says Mike Vaccaro. Luckily, Will Carroll says that it's likely that Harvey will return from the surgery as good as ever.

Even with Harvey out, the Mets still have a glut of young pitchers and that bodes well for their future. Mike Kerwick spoke to Jason Parks about the futures of Noah Syndergaard, Rafael Montero, and Steven Matz.

Sandy Alderson says that the Mets need to add more quality arms in the bullpen.

Mike Puma reports that Carlos Beltran said he wouldn't rule out returning to the Mets for 2014. Puma also says that the Mets would consider Beltran, though his declining range in the outfield may be an issue.

Toby Hyde continues to recap the Mets' Sterling Award Winners, looking at St. Lucie winner Dustin Lawley.

The Binghamton Mets long rumored move to Ottawa seems to be officially dead, as the city is looking to add an independent league team instead.

Johan Santana has begun throwing again, which is great news for him. Of course, it remains to be seen if he ever dons a Mets uniform again.

Yesterday At AA

Eric created BringBackBeltran.com, a website devoted to bringing back Carlos Beltran. Be sure to give Carlos a high-five, too!

Should the Mets tender or non-tender Omar Quintanilla this offseason?

Jeffrey Paternostro wrote about Brooklyn righty Miller Diaz.

Around the Playoffs

There were four playoff games yesterday:

In the second game of their series, the Pirates beat the Cardinals 7-1 and evened things up at a game apiece. Rookie pitcher Gerrit Cole was excellent for Pittsburgh.

The Red Sox stomped on the Rays 12-2 in the opener of their series. Game two of that series is tonight at 5:30, as John Lackey matches up with David Price.

The Braves took game two of their series with the Dodgers by a score of 4-3, as the teams are tied at one.

Finally, the Tigers beat the A's 3-2 in the opener of their set. Game two of that series takes place tonight at 9:00, when Justin Verlander takes on Sonny Gray.

Around the Majors

Alex Rodriguez filed two lawsuits yesterday – one against Major League Baseball for pursuing him in what was termed as a "witch hunt", and a medical malpractice lawsuit against the Yankees team doctor.

The Reds canned Dusty Baker yesterday, the first move the team made after getting eliminated from the playoffs. While Tony LaRussa is said to not be interested in the job, Jim Riggleman is considered a candidate for some reason.

Despite rumors that one of them would be fired, both Mike Scioscia and Jerry DiPoto are now expected to be back for the Angels in 2014.

Executive director of the MLB players union Michael Weiner is said to have just 2-6 months to live due to a cancerous brain tumor.

Albert Pujols has sued Jack Clark over the steroids claims he made on the radio in August.
