Mets Morning News: Byrd flies to Philly, Mets show interest in getting Younger

Debby Wong-US PRESSWIRE

Your Wednesday morning dose of New York Mets and Major League Baseball news, notes, and links.

Meet the Mets

Sandy Alderson spoke about the team's plans for the outfield along with the rest of the roster. The Mets may be prepared to jump in on a corner outfielder like Curtis Granderson, as Alderson is expected to be aggressive. Acquiring power will, however, be costly.

J.P. Ricciardi spoke as well and the Mets' assistant GM said that they'll likely prioritize offense over pitching. Offense is clearly the roster's more pressing need but it would be a shame if they totally ignored adding quality pitching.

The Mets have shown interest in outfielder Chris Young, who'd be a decent enough bounceback candidate.

Around the Majors

MLB is likely to approve funding for instant replay, much to the chagrin of fans of the human element.

Ex-Mets outfielder Marlon Byrd has successfully parlayed his 2013 into a multi-year deal, signing with the Phillies for 2 years and $16 million. The deal also has a vesting option for 2016 worth $8 million. Meanwhile, Howard Eskin reported last night that the Phillies are working on a blockbuster deal with the Blue Jays in which they'd acquire Jose Bautista for Domonic Brown and others.

Clint Hurdle and Terry Francona were named managers of the year in the NL and AL, respectively.

Turner Field will be demolished once the Braves get their new ballpark in a few years.

Yesterday At AA

Alex Nelson reviewed the Mets' second pick in the 2008, second baseman Reese Havens.

Matthew Callan wished farewell to the house of horrors stadium down in Atlanta.
