Mets Rumors: Mets checked in on Dustin Ackley

Otto Greule Jr

The former top prospect has floundered with the Mariners.

It has been assumed at the Mets would slot Eric Young Jr. into second base if Daniel Murphy is traded, but that might not be the case. Jon Heyman says the Mets, along with the Padres and Yankees, have shown interest in Mariners second baseman Dustin Ackley.

With the signing of Robinson Cano and the emergence of prospects Brad Miller and Nick Franklin, Ackley is a man without a job. The second overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, Ackley, 25, made his MLB debut in 2011 and did well, posting a .273/.348/.417 with a 117 wRC+ in 376 plate appearances. His rookie success led to some favorable comparisons between him and the first overall pick of the 2009 draft, Stephen Strasburg.

The next two seasons would see Ackley's performance collapse. In Ackley's last 1,095 plate appearances, he's posted a .236/.304/.333 line with a 79 wRC+. Ackley was demoted at one point in 2012, which prompted his manager, Eric Wedge, to lay the blame for his demise on sabermetrics:

"It's the new generation. It's all this sabermetrics stuff, for lack of a better term, you know what I mean?" Wedge said. "People who haven't played since they were 9 years old think they have it figured out. It gets in these kids' heads."

On the surface, a failed prospect from a terrible organization doesn't sound all that intriguing. For the Mets, though, the options at second base will be limited if a Daniel Murphy trade is completed and depending on the price, taking a chance on a player who was an above average hitter two seasons ago and turns just 26 in February may be worthwhile.
