Mets to sign Bartolo Colon to a two year deal worth $20 million

Ken Rosenthal reports that the Mets have come to an agreement with 40-year old free agent starting pitcher Bartolo Colon on a two-year deal.

After adding Curtis Granderson to the mix a few days ago, there was some worry that they would be done in the free agent market. That doesn't appear to be the case, however, as Ken Rosenthal reported on Twitter this evening that the Mets have come to an agreement with free agent starting pitcher Bartolo Colon. The soon to be 41-year old veteran, who spent the last two seasons in Oakland, is said to have agreed to a two year contract with the Mets worth $20 million total.

Colon tossed 190.1 innings for the Athletics last season, putting up a 2.65 ERA and a 3.23 FIP. Though the Mets are guaranteeing Colon's age 41 and 42 seasons, Colon has been remarkably durable and pitched very well the last three seasons. Combined, he's put up a 3.32 ERA in 507 innings in that span and while walking a minuscule 92 batters. A multi-year contract for any pitcher over the age of 40 can be a somewhat scary proposition but assuming he can eat plenty of innings in 2014 while Matt Harvey recovers, the Mets seem to have themselves a good deal for a quality starting pitcher.
