A year ago, after they had a disappointing season, I suggested here that the Jets had just finished the equivalent of 2009 in "Met years," and would face a long purgatory. Some agreed. But someone who follows the NFL more closely than I do these days said that in the current environment turnarounds in that league come faster, and so it has come to pass.
The 2013 Jets were lucky, something neither the Jets nor the Mets have been in recent history. Without two dumb penalties by their opponents on what should have been the last play of the game, they would have been 6 - 10. But they played hard long enough to let the breaks come their way.
Luck aside, I will be satisfied if the 2014 Mets achieve the same results as the 2013 Jets.
- A .500 or better record.
- A strong winning record at home, a particular problem for the Mets recently.
- A better record than their metro area rival.
- The fringe of playoff contention for much of the season, despite being far from a championship contender (yet). And
- The feeling that the team is on the way up, and better can be expected the season after.
