Mets Free Agency: Front office discussing a possible fourth year for Curtis Granderson

Tom Szczerbowski

GM Sandy Alderson may have to add a fourth year to the deal if he hopes to land the power-hitting outfielder.

Talks between the Mets and free agent outfielder Curtis Granderson have been heating up this week, but will the notoriously frugal Mets get a deal done? Andy Martino of the New York Daily News is reporting that the New York front office might have to offer a four-year deal to Granderson to get him to accept. Although the Mets would obviously rather just commit to three seasons of Granderson, a fourth year is still being discussed.

What does this mean? Well, more Granderson rumors can only mean that a deal is getting closer to fruition, so that's good. From Martino's tweets it sounds like the Mets are at three years or at most three years and a vesting option for a fourth while Granderson wants a guaranteed fourth.

Alderson and company have thus far been indifferent to fans' (and the media's) pleas to spend big money, Granderson could offer the type of value that the front office can appreciate. The 33-year-old outfielder has always been strikeout prone, but he has consistently hit for power in his career with the Tigers and Yankees. Before an injury-hampered 2013, Granderson hit over 40 home runs for two consecutive seasons and at least 20 home runs for six straight seasons.
